Abstract
; Food has played an important role throughout the long history and tradition of China. As a consequence, Chinese language is rich in words and phrases of speech containing references to food. These words and phrases of speech in turn reflect the history, culture, and national spirit of China. Based on this important relationship, this thesis analyzes the meaning and etymology of words and phrases of speech that involve descriptions related to food, focusing in particular on vocabulary that is richest in cultural meaning. The second section of this thesis provides key background information by demonstrating the important role that food plays in Chinese culture. The culinary culture of China is described, and through this description the profound effect that it has on many facet of life in China and its relationship to Chinese vocabulary becomes evident. The third section of this thesis categorizes and analyzes words and phrases of speech containing references to food. Words are categorized into the following groups: basic words describing food items, those related to taste and smell, those describing the method of cooking, words describing cooking utensils, names of dishes, and vocabulary related to food served on holidays. The results of this analysis can be summarized as follows. First, because the etymological roots of these words reflect a diverse range of cultural phenomenon, it is difficult to grasp their true meaning by simply examining the superficial meanings of the words. Second, by grasping the true meanings of words that arose out of analogous connections, the unique way of thinking contained in the vocabularies analogies becomes apparent. Third, because vocabulary is fundamentally created and developed concurrently with the development of a society s history, it reflects the altered appearance of traditional Chinese culture in modern Chinese society. In the fourth section of this thesis, the traditional cultural phenomenon associated with the vocabulary in the previous section are examined in greater detail. First, among these words and phrases, there are newly coined words that focus on social phenomenon. Through these new words, it is possible to examine the social changes that arose as a result of modernization. Second, through the vocabulary created against the background of traditional culture, it is possible to better understand the ceremonial customs of marriage, funerals, and traditional holidays. Finally, the study of this type of vocabulary can lead to insights into the way that Chinese people think and communicate. For example, through this analysis, it is strongly evident that the Chinese take much pleasure in words and phrases that employ metaphors and hyperbole. This fourth section demonstrates how words and phrases related to food allow for a deeper understanding of Chinese social and traditional cultural phenomenon and of the way of thinking of Chinese people. Consequently, these words contain a high degree of cultural value. Finally, this thesis examines the changes in culture and vocabulary usage that accompanies the changing times. Our own country s cultural context has evolved with the ongoing development of our society and economy. In much the same way, as its culture evolves, Chinese words and phrases related to food will continue to change, reflecting the modernization of its society and economy.
