Abstract
This study aims to analyze the brand image and design of men’s makeup products from IVCD (Integrated Visual Communication Design) perspective and suggest future strategies for competitiveness. In terms of the process of formation of men’s makeup market in Korea, brands that manufactured and sold women’s makeup products began to launch men’s makeup products in the in the beginning. At this time, the products mostly consisted of products that can cover blemishes on skin (tone-up cream, BB cream, cushion, etc.), and products such as colored lip balm were difficult to find. Also, since women’s skin color was used as the standard, rather than reflecting the nature of men’s skin, it was difficult for men to find makeup products that suited their skin, and because of this, makeup was dominantly considered as being used on special days such as job interview. As men’s grooming trend emerged later, access to makeup products became much easier. Number of makeup products purchased per man increased, and men’s makeup market exceeded 1 trillion won as of 2017. Like this, the market itself has grown quantitatively, but men’s makeup market still requires qualitative growth compared to women’s makeup market. Identities between brands are vague, and brands are not categorized well within the brand according to product characteristics that it is difficult to determine product features. Also, millennial generation, which is the main users of men’s makeup products, recognizes brand familiar as a helpful tool in life, not simply the idea of trademark. In order to appeal the brand and products to customer base with such characteristics, brand image and design need to be researched in more diversified perspectives than before and establish strategies accordingly. Therefore, this study recombined the analytical tools from IVCD elements that are appropriate for Korean men’s makeup brands, and analyzed brand and products through them. It compared and analyzed 5 brands that are launched in online stores and H&B (health and beauty) stores in Korea, and the results are as follows. First, the logos were modern and neat, and used achromatic colors or colors with low chroma in many cases. Second, in terms of advertising design, casing a famous model clarified brand character and distinguished it from other brands than not using a famous model, but the products alone without a big model did not deliver the brand image strongly. Third, as for the containers and packages, there wasn’t a significant distinction among brands in terms of their form due to the limitation of mass production, but businesses used identity design elements to differentiate their brand from others. Fourth, in terms of digital media design, image tone and manner varied slightly depending on the media, even within the same brand. Also, while some brands followed design policy well, some did not. Based on above results, aims for men’s makeup brands in the future were suggested. Men’s makeup brands need to consider their brand image and design strategies in diversified perspective to differentiate from other brands and gain an advantage in the market.
