Abstract
Consumer’s preference for Untact services has rapidly spread along with the Corona virus that broke out in the first half of 2020. The crisis of the existing offline clothing brand was an issue that had emerged before the Corona crisis. As the number of single-person households increased, individualized and personalized consumer characteristics began to emerge. In a society where complex and diverse needs coexist, there is a growing feeling of high fatigue from living in harmony. As a result, people do not want unnecessary contact and time-consuming, and they also choose Untact services or activities in the market. In Korea, which has the highest smartphone ownership rate of 94 percent worldwide, it is easy to find people who use their smartphone anytime and anywhere. In this age of digital consumption, online shopping has grown by 172 percent for the last three years and it is predicted that the growth of mobile shopping would be further accelerated. Online sales of clothing exceed 14.8705 trillion won, 61.5 percent of which is conducted with mobile devices worth 9.139 trillion won. This clearly demonstrates that the focus has been shifted from the e-channel to the m-channel. In contrast, retailers selling both online and offline recorded a mere 5.2 billion won of sales as of 2019, accounting for a significantly smaller percentage of the total sales of clothing. This phenomenon is why it seems inevitable for offline brands to leverage more of their mobile channels. Considering the changing market environments, this study aims to examine how brick-and mortar retailers could successfully utilize their mobile channels and to suggest effective strategies. In this study, both case analysis and empirical research were conducted. Strategies of two representative companies on their online and offline channels were compared and analyzed. When it comes to the empirical study, a preliminary survey and a main survey were carried out respectively. In the preliminary survey, a group of experts in the fashion industry participated in in-depth interviews to come up with the characteristics of mobile shopping of clothing. 1)Ubiquitous 2)Convenience(Personalization) 3)Visibility 4)Product reliability. The main survey was done on male and female participants in their 20s and 30s to find the needs of consumers for mobile purchase of clothing. The case analysis and survey results were applied to the 4Cs of marketing, based on which we suggest ways to foster mobile channels of offline brands as follow: For convenience, 1) it was found out that customers still have problems checking the actual color, texture, and fitting of clothing due to the inherent limitations of mobile shopping. In order to offset these limitations, it is necessary for mobile channels of offline clothing brands to improve their way of demonstrating the goods. 2) Utilizing a mobile channel is all about Platformization. It is important for the companies to differentiate themselves by running unique channels and deploying their own content strategies. But it requires a huge amount of initial investment, taking a lot of time and manpower. 3) The way is to enable customers to more effectively enjoy services in brick-and-mortar stores by using the mobile web. For example, it is possible to print QR codes on each clothes so that those who do not want help from store clerks can check information on their own by using their smartphone to read the codes. For costs to consumers, it is needed to do product planning for mobile sales and to make strategies because costs of goods are associated with their value. For consumer value, offering certain items or brands exclusively mobile is recommended to enhance customer loyalty. This is to attract customers to mobile channels by providing exclusive items or brands, making those channels worth to use. To this end, it would be more effective to focus on a small number of items for a short period of time with eye-catching advertisement and reasonable prices rather than selling seasonal item just like it is done offline. If companies accumulate customer data by offering custom services, they will be able to conduct product planning with new items as well as basic items. This is believed to be helpful to organize item in mobile channels and expand sales. For communication, companies used to do marketing by tapping into the desire for the ownership of the brand value. But what is essential to mobile brands is to form a fan base. They need to create a lasting relationship with customers and cultivate their brand culture together. This study aims to come up with ways to promote mobile channels of offline brands through the 4Cs of marketing by conducting comparative analysis of marketing strategies of Fila Korea and LF mall as representative companies and making surveys primarily on the millennial generation.
