Abstract
Design is one of the discriminatory assets that greatly affects a company's competitiveness. Many companies have successfully innovated through their design management, and the design capabilities they possess are recognized as the most important factors for their performance and competitiveness. Many companies recognize the importance of design and are expanding their investment in design. One of the most important issues in corporate management is the ability to make better design choices. Design decisions are very important issues in management activities, and although they interact directly or indirectly with almost all departments, they lack objective indicators. With design decisions having a wide range of attributes, including functional aspects, aesthetic aspects, personal empirical aspects, valueistic tastes and cultural values, there is ambiguity and uncertainty in design decision making because most decision makers choose designs by experience, intuition, and personal tastes. A survey of design decisions by domestic kitchenware companies with sealed containers indicated that the decision was made by prioritizing the opinions of the stakeholder organizations related to sales and production, rather than the weight of design experts, or by relying entirely on the CEO's subjective judgment. This approach to design decision has led to the question of whether it is the right decision with the design core value first. In this study, we tried to experimentally study an enterprise's design decision-making methods using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to make design decisions more logical and systematic in the enterprise using glass-like enclosed containers. The AHP technique is a methodology for classifying the various evaluation attributes that make up the problem hierarchically and deriving weights through pairwise comparisons, where there are many criteria for evaluation of decision making and complex issues can be stratified and visualized to make better decisions through logical and systematic judgment. Prior to the AHP technique, a group of experts was formed to select design critical elements of glass-wrapped containers to conduct a preliminary survey, and to derive the critical elements of the design that make up the glass-wrapped container: 'Closed force, stepping function, and simple structure'. The concept of each element derived was implemented as a design and it was set as a higher layer element in the AHP technique. Based on the design of upper layer elements, CMF design was carried out and 'color, material, surface' was set as a component of lower layer. Using AHP technology, the relative importance and priority of the design elements of the glass-tight container were identified by empirical research. This study comprised design decision makers in a group of experts in the enterprise and separated the decision makers into product designers and salespeople groups to analyze the hierarchical structure of the design elements of glass-waste containers and extract the importance of each factor through AHP technology. As a result, the product designer group at the higher layer has the highest weight on the tightness element. It was granted and the salesperson group gave the highest weight to the stepping function. In the overall elemental priority, two groups were compared and analyzed to show a significant difference in the importance given to each group. In contrast to the factors that gave the highest weight to each other, each group gave the lowest weight of 7 and 8 above 7 and 8. The above results can be expected to create numerous conflicts among stakeholders in the design decision-making process. This is a result of understanding the criteria for design that product designers and salespeople think of, and the goals that each group pursues are different, so that conflicts between design and stakeholder organizations can be minimized. Many stakeholders are deemed to need active cooperation and efforts. Based on the above results, the conclusions reached are: First, design organizations need to provide more detailed information about design guides, design plans, and so that they can fully understand the specific information and design of the direction an enterprise wants to go in order to make the right design decisions. There is a need for criteria that are consistent with corporate characteristics for the direction of decision-making within a firm, and it can also be seen as important to shape the setting of criteria so that it can be established as the most important basis for decision making. Second, from a long-term perspective, design education programs can be actively utilized to ensure that stakeholder organizations have a good understanding of the design. Third, it is effective to make design decisions by a smaller number of more qualified professionals. Fourth, it can utilize CDO (Chief Design Officer) system, which is a design chief that is actively accepted by advanced companies. In this study, we investigated a group of general consumers who purchase additional glass-waste containers in addition to design decision makers in the enterprise, considering that glass-wrapped containers are consumer products. The group of general consumers gave the highest weight to the elements of tightness at the higher layer and also gave the overall priority in order of material, surface, and color of sealed components. Consumers in general were perceived as the most important factors than any other element, and this seems to be necessary to study the design of the method of expressing the most basic element in the design of a glass-tight container and to study the use of various materials. According to a comparative analysis and analysis of age and number of weekly use by a group of general consumers, 20 groups and those who used them more than once a week considered color to be more important than surface in each lower layer. Since these two groups can be considered beginners and potential customers in purchasing or using glass-wrapped containers, color is considered an important factor to induce the inflow of potential customers and is worth a thorough analysis as future customers. It is also a good idea to classify and analyze these clearly distinct groups of consumers and to continue with prior research. This study is meaningful in that the design decisions were analyzed empirically by trying and verifying layering using AHP techniques. The results of this study are expected to help companies make design decisions in the future, and to help derive insight from the results of decisions between the companies that sell the product to the market and the consumers who purchase the product, so that they can later commercialize the new product in a single methodology. However, design decisions are not yet well equipped with a basic theoretical framework, so it is necessary to experiment with a variety of methodologies to build a system of design decisions, and it is expected that a systematic follow-up study will continue to provide new directions.
