CSR 성과와 비용의 관계가 재무 성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine if there exists any systematic relation between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance. Based on the previous research, I hypothesized that CSR would enhance the firms’ financial performance. Specifically, the firms with higher CSR effectiveness (CSR cost effectiveness concerning CSR performance) are predicted to have higher profitability. These hypotheses were tested using 1,435 Korean firms over six-year period (2004-2009). An index published by Korean Economic Justice Institute (KEJI) was used as the measure of CSR performance, and donation data from income statement divided by total sales was used as the measure of CSR expenditure. Contrary to my prediction, empirical results suggest that the firms with higher cost exhibit better financial performance under the same CSR performance. These results provide different angle to analyze the relationship between financial performance and CSR performances.;본 연구는 기업의 사회적 성과(이하 CSR 성과)와 비용이 기업의 재무적 성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 선행연구의 결과가 일관되게 제시되지 않고 있는 점에 주목하여 이들의 관계에 대한 명확한 보다 정확한 분석을 위해 사회적 성과에 비용의 측면을 고려한 CSR 비용의 효율성 (이하 CSR 효율성)과 기업의 재무적 성과와의 관계를 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 CSR 성과와 재무성과와의 관계, CSR 효율성과 재무성과와의 관계를 회귀식을 통해 분석하였다. CSR 성과의 대용치로 경실련 산하 경제정의연구소의 경제정의지수 (이하 KEJI지수)를, CSR 비용의 대용치로 재무제표 상의 매출액 대비 기부금 비율을 사용하여 2004년부터 2009년까지의 1,435개의 데이터를 가지고 분석하였다. 두 가설 모두 시차모형(Time-Lag Model)을 사용하여 CSR 성과 측정 후 1년, 2년, 3년간의 재무성과(ROA, ROS)와의 관련성을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 CSR 성과는 재무성과와 정(+)의 상관관계를 갖는다는 것을 가설은 부분적으로 지지되었고, CSR 효율성은 재무성과와 정(+)의 상관관계를 갖는다는 것은 기각되었다. 이는 CSR 성과와 재무성과와의 관계를 살펴볼 때 비용을 고려한 비용 대비 성과가 아닌 기부에 대한 적극성을 고려하여야 함을 시사하고 있다.
