The new product introduction serves as a major source to determine a distribution channel’s competitive advantage. Given the distinctive role of distribution channels as intermediaries between upstream manufacturers and downstream customers, distributors have potential to participate in new product developments to create their own value beyond reselling products of their suppliers, whereby distributors can attain the competitive advantages. Accordingly, this study investigates the co-development tendency in light of distributors while previous studies associated with the co-development focused on the perspective of upstream manufacturers. This study examines the consequences of a distributor’s co-development tendency in two terms of the new product innovativeness and speed to market. Moreover, based on the resource-based view, I investigate the moderating effects of a distributor’s relational (customer and supplier) assets on the relationship between a distributor’s co-development tendency and its new product performances. In particular, the customer and supplier assets were examined along with two dimensions of the width and depth. This study is conducted through a survey method with 128 distributors across four industries (computers and software, electronic and electric equipment or components, industrial machineries and equipment, and other machineries and equipment industries), and the hypotheses of this study were tested by the regression analysis. The results show that a distributor’s co-development tendency directly enhances both the new product innovativeness and speed to market. Regarding the moderating effects of a distributor’s relational assets, this study presents the insignificant moderating effects of customer and supplier assets on the relationship between a distributor’s co-development tendency and its new product innovativeness. In contrast, the empirical test of this study results in the significant moderating effects of customer and supplier assets on the relationship between a distributor’s co-development tendency and its speed to market. Specifically, while the width and depth of customer asset and width of supplier asset positively influence the impact of a distributor’s co-development tendency on its speed to market, the depth of supplier asset negatively influences the impact of a distributor’s co-development tendency on its speed to market. This study has important theoretical and managerial implications. First of all, this study enlarges the area of co-development by illuminating the co-development in light of distributors, not manufacturers. From the distributor perspective, furthermore, this research examines the consequence of a distributor’s co-development tendency by focusing on the value creation rather than operational efficiency. Second, the results reveal that a distributor’s co-development positively contributes to the speed to market as well as new product innovativeness. Contrary to the predicted tradeoff between the new product innovativeness and speed to market, the findings represent that a distributor’s co-development enhances not only its new product innovativeness, but also its speed to market, whereby a distributor acts as the key messenger of market knowledge (e.g., demand requirements, market trends, and even competitors’ status quo) that upstream manufacturers are generally difficult to approach alone. Lastly, the results suggest that the width and depth of customer and supplier assets are influential factors to determine the interactive effects of a distributor’s co-development tendency and its new product performances. Given differential underlying mechanisms of relational assets’ width and depth, this study emphasizes the importance of a distributor’s relational assets to managers related to distribution channels. In other words, this study notices the practitioners to effectively manage the relational assets to maximize the impact of a distributor’s co-development tendency on new product performances, considering their strategic focus among the new product innovativeness and speed to market. In sum, the findings underline the importance of a distributor’s potential role in new product developments, and of the inter-firm relationships to determine the impact of a distributor’s co-development tendency on its new product performances.-
