Abstract

This thesis investigates the rising middle-class discourse of "good-breeding" in eighteenth-century England, through a close reading of social mores and values in Frances Burney’s first novel, Evelina. It charts how the rising middle class culture, driven by the rise of commerce and consumption, sought to counter critiques of greed and corruption by placing emphasis on aesthetic value and moral sentiment. This new idealization of refinement and a good-breeding defined by manners rather than birth, allowed the newly affluent classes to compete with the traditional upper-class in matters of culture and taste. The second chapter attempts to show the implications of "good-breeding" through Evelina’s experiences in the first modern commercialized city, London. Evelina detests the Branghtons and Mr. Smith because they are addicted to moneymaking and behave impudently "without any taste". The polite "good-breeding" Evelina defines is not only the ability to enjoy the new culture of commerce but also to behave with refined manners in the new public spaces where people mingle and enjoy cultural entertainments. The third chapter shows how the culture of sensibility emphasizes the value of innate human feeling to explain the central place held by polite manners in the eighteenth century. This culture of sensibility is based on the general recognition that feminine sensibility is superior to male sensibility in its capacity for refined feeling. "Feminine sensibility" implies the sensitive ability to sympathize with others’ difficulties as well the ability to refine and regulate individual behaviour. This feminine sensibility permits the heroine, Evelina, to become an "arbiter of taste". Evelina has the hightest regard for Lord Orville because he shows refined manners and a modesty that sets him apart from other aristocrats. She criticizes both aristocrats, who demonstrate excessive sensibility and the lower classes, which lack delicate feeling because of their mutual inability to foster a moral sense of responsibility to others. The last chapter investigates in what ways Evelina characterizes the model of the "desirable woman" through her refined judgement and moral feeling. Finally, the thesis examines how the culture of refined moral sentiment is linked to the rise of English nationalism in the eighteenth century.

;본 논문은 프란시스 버니의 첫 소설인 『이블리나』를 통해서 18세기 영국의 근대 상업 문화의 주역으로 등장한 신흥 도시 중산층의 세련된 취향의 의미에 관해서 고찰하고자 한다. 도시 중산층의 자본의 부는 상업의 성장을 가능하게 했고 그들이 새로운 엘리트로 도약할 수 있게 만든 원동력이었다. 하지만 이것은 또한 개인이 사리사욕을 탐하는 도덕적 타락의 위험성을 내포함으로써 도시 중산층은 미감과 도덕성을 겸비한 '세련된 취향(refined taste)'의 중요성을 제시한다. 도시 중산층은 이 취향을 보여줄 수 있는 "교양(good-breeding)"을 새로운 미덕으로 제시함으로써 가문의 혈통을 내세웠던 전통 귀족의 세력에 대항하고자 했다. 본론 1에서는 18세기 영국 도시 중산층의 새로운 미덕으로서 교양의 개념을 살펴보고자 한다. 이블리나는 런던의 상업 문화를 유쾌하게 향유하기 위해서는 시민들이 도덕성과 미감을 함축한 세련된 취향을 보여줄 수 있을 때 가능하다는 것을 이야기한다. 이블리나는 돈의 매력을 이제 알기 시작한 낮은 계층의 사람들이 예술을 즐길 수 있는 미적 감각도 없이 단지 겉모습만 화려하게 치장함으로써 신사가 되려는 것을 천박한 취향으로 비난한다. 이에 반해 이블리나는 고급스런 상업 문화를 적극적으로 즐기면서 상대방을 배려하는 언행을 보여주는 오빌을 예의바른 매너를 가진 인물로 평가한다. 즉 중산층이 강조하는 교양은 친밀한 사회성을 과시하며 서로의 가치를 존중하고 예의바른 말과 행동을 보여주는 것에서 찾을 수 있다. 본론 2에서는 이러한 교양을 보여주기 위해서 도시 중산층이 갖추어야할 세련된 취향은 인간의 선한 느낌, 즉 자애로운 감수성의 가치를 강조한 것이며 특히 여성다운 특성과 연관된 것임을 살펴본다. 이블리나의 섬세한 감수성은 상대방을 배려할 수 있는 부드러운 말과 행동을 이끌어주는 원천이다. 이블리나가 오빌을 예의바른 남성으로 칭찬하는 것도 그가 섬세한 여성적 감수성을 가졌기 때문이다. 여성이 섬세하고 풍부한 감성을 가졌다는 인식은 여성들이 존경받게 만들었지만 물질적 탐욕에 즉흥적으로 반응하는 나약한 감성을 가진 여성이라는 비난을 받게도 만들었다. 중상주의를 지향하는 근대 영국 사회는 섬세한 여성적 감수성을 통해 교양을 함양하는 개인을 강조했다. 이러한 맥락에서 『이블리나』에서는 귀족 계층과 상인 계층의 천박한 매너는 섬세한 여성적 감수성이 결여된 것으로서 새로운 시민적 교양을 보여줄 수 없음을 시사한다. 본론 3에서는 도덕적 감성을 가진 이블리나가 정의로운 행동을 실천할 수 있다는 것이 18세기 여성의 사회적 위상에 기여하는 바를 살펴보고자 한다. 도덕성을 강조하는 근대 자본주의 가정에서 이블리나처럼 공정한 판단을 할 수 있는 여성은 이상적인 아내와 어머니로서 존중받을 수 있는 것이다. 또한 이 소설에서는 도덕적 감성이 부족한 남녀의 결혼이 시사하는 위험성을 재현하고 있다. 그러므로 도덕적 감성을 통해 옳고 그른 것을 분별할 수 있는 이블리나와 오빌은 신분이 아니라 내면의 가치를 통해 평생의 동반자를 선택하려는 중산층의 이상적인 가정을 만들 수 있는 것이다. 궁극적으로 이처럼 도덕적 분별에 뛰어난 여성적 가치를 존중하는 것은 곧 성실, 정직, 순수함과 같은 도덕성을 영국적 가치로 이상화한 영국의 '국가주의'를 형성하는 토대가 될 수 있는 것이다.
