인물중심으로 본 The Plain Dealer와 The Double Dealer

Abstract

Restoration Comedy는 1660년에서 부터 1710년경까지 영국에서 쓰여진 희극을 가리키며 일명 Comedy of Manners라고도 칭한다. 지난 300년간 Restoration Comedy는 주로 도덕주의적 비평가에 의하여 부도덕한 작품이라는 평가를 받아왔다. 1950년대에 와서 사회비판을 주목적으로 하는 풍자문학이라는 견해가 대두되었다. 본 논문에서는 William Wycherley의 The Plain Dealer와 William Congreve의 The Double Dealer를 분석하여 어떤 주제와 인물로 풍자적 기능을 하는지 검토하여 보았다. 두 작가는 love,marriage,manners등에서 나타나는 인물의plain-dealing과 double-dealing을 통하여 당시 사회상의 위선, 허위를 풍자하였다. 또한 인물은 유형화되어 풍자적 기능을 갖는다. Wycherley는 The Plain Dealer에서 당시 사회상의 위선, 허위뿐만 아니라 plain-dealing만을 고집하는 Manly를 통해 인간 본성도 풍자하고 있다. Congreve는 The Double Dealer에서 당시의 정략결혼으로 맺어진 상류사회의 어리석은 남편들, 부정한 아내들을 공격하며 Mellefont와Cynthia를 통하여 이상적인 결혼의 본보기를 제시한다. 두 작품에서 공통적으로 볼 수 있는것은 plain-dealing과 double-de aling의 두 세계를 보여주면서 선택이나 판단은 관객에게 맡기고 있다. 그러나 "well-intentioned" 한쪽에 조금 더 큰 보상을 주면서 어느 한 쪽으로 치우침 보다는 중용의 길을 제시한다.;The comedy written between 1660 and around 1710 has been called Restoration Comedy and sometimes Comedy of Manners. During the past 300 years, the study of Restoration Comedy has been led by moral critics. But in the 1950's, critics have come to an agreement that the Restoration Comedy is a satire written for social criticism of the period by writers of social consciousness. The purpose of this paper is to study the two plays -- The Plain Dealer by William Wycherley and The Double Dealer by William Congreve -- as satire, analysing the themes and characters. The themes of these plays are plain-dealing and double-dealing of the characters in love, marriage and manners, through which hypocrisy and folly of the Restoration society are criticized. The characters are type characters who have satiric functions in the plays. In The Plain Dealer, Wycherley criticized not only the social vices and hypocrisy but human nature through Manly, a plain-dealer. In The Double Dealer, Congreve criticized the follies of fools, treachery of their wives and hypocrisy of malicious truewit and described marriage based upon true love as something ideal and desirable. In both plays, the characters who are plain-dealers succeed in achieving happy marriages, while the ridiculous fools and those who are malicious double-dealers are exposed and satirized. Bub the attitude of the writers suggest a compromise between the world of plain-dealing, and double-dealing.
