Abstract

John Donne's poetry has its revival in the early twentieth century since The Metaphysical lyrics and poems of the Seventeenth Century was published in 1921 by Herbert Grierson. The word 'Metaphysical poets' is applied to Donne and his followers. Donne has many complexities in his works. Donne draws most of his images from science, philosophy, medicine and mathematics. He express his emotions effectively bv using his various images in his works. His imagery has been criticized for its seeming disparity and ambiguity. What is called 'the metaphysical' is the new style suitable to the poet's complicated mental states. Donne's "Two Anniversaries" are long poems written in 1611 and 1612. These are elegies for the death of Sir Robert Drury's daughter - a girl who died in her fifteenth year. The poet celebrates her death rather than expressing his personal sorrow and pity. The poems have been criticized as being too extravagant. Donne himseLf said that these poems were about the 'Idea of a Woman'. "The First Anniversary" consists of an Introduction and a Conciusion, five section which form the body of the work. Each of these sections is subdivided into three points. The poet deals with the spirit of 'contemptus mundi', through meditation. He emphasizes the decay and deterioration of man and this world. "The Second Anniversary" is divided into seven Introduction and a conclusion. The body is divided into seven sections unlike the preceding poem. In this poem, Donne presents the process of the soul flying up to heaven. These poems are based on the traditional form of meditation which begin from the meditation of the world and ends with the praise of the Glory of God. The poet praises that she had God's image in her diligent devotion and reiterates the image of God in man of the world. He emphasizes the need of religion for the virtue of heaven. The eulogy of Elizabeth Drury illuminates the principal action - the creation of the new correspondence between pure soul ana a new heaven that transcend nature and reason. "Two Anniversaries" are composed in order to make the crucial decision of his life's way.
