The objective of this thesis is to explore the shifts of psychological realities (mythic and sensory) within the soldiers and people experiencing the war at different phases of the Vietnam War and how these realities are portrayed and emphasized by the narrators (war correspondents) of following the literary works; The Quiet American, Dispatches and The Lotus Eaters. The soldiers fighting in the war exhibits both the mythic and sensory reality. They shift from the mythic reality to sensory reality in the course of the war. Chapter 1 will discuss the portrayal of mythic reality and how this is influential in Graham Greene?s The Quiet American in detail. As a work covering the early stages of the war, it demonstrates how mythic reality influences the individual who supports the war. Alden Pyle (the quiet American) is the subject of observation by the English reporter Thomas Fowler who illustrates Pyle?s escalation of the belief of the myth that eventually leads him to his direct involvement in the war in Vietnam. In Chapter 2, Michael Herr?s Dispatches will be explored. Herr?s experiences at the peak of the war allow clearer understanding of the violence that happens during Vietnam. In this phase of the war, sensory reality is more emphasized due to the escalation of the actual violence and inhumanities of the soldiers in the battlefield. The war is also depicted through the eyes of a journalist, and being a correspondent keeps a fair distance with the actual soldiers fighting in the war in order to observe the battles in the sensory state. Therefore, it is believed to help the readers understand the mythic state of the soldiers from a sensory perspective. Chapter 3 will deal mainly with Tatjana Soli?s The Lotus Eaters. The work written at the end of the war allows a wider perspective and a female perspective the war. The photojournalist, Helen Adams, relives the experiences of the war at a point where the war has officially ended for the Americans. Her reliving of the experiences is seen as memory or recollection of the things she saw and did during the war. As a female narrator, Helen is able to capture moments that are not depicted by the previous journalists. Her images capturing of the war stand at a sensory rather than the mythic reality. In conclusion, three works on the Vietnam War, The Quiet American, Dispatches, and The Lotus Eaters will be examined in an attempt to observe the psychological shifts (mythic and sensory) of the soldiers participating in the war, and how these phases are emphasized and retold by the narrators (war correspondents and photojournalists).;본 논문은 베트남 전쟁에 참전했던 군인들에게 전쟁의 각 단계에서 일어날 수 있는 정신적 현실 (Psychological realities)의 변화에 대해 알아보고자 한다.
