Abstract

Eugene O'Neill의 작품세계는 연극의 끊임없는 실험과정이라고 할 수 있을 만큼 다채롭게 변모한다. 희랍비극과 현대 극작가들의 사상과 극작기교를 동시에 받아들였고, 작품소재의 범위도 심리학, 철학의 영역에 까지 확대하였으며 이것을 사실주의. 자연주의. 표현주의. 상징주의등으로 형식을 달리하여 표현하는등 내용과 형식 양면에 걸쳐 다양성을 지닌다. 이러한 작품들은 삶 자체의 문제를 보다 솔직하게 다루고 있다는 공통점을 갖는다. 때문에 O'Neill 예술세계의 변천은 곧 인생의 의미를 모색하는 과정이며 따라서 그의 작품들은 작가의 인생관을 해명하기 위한 매개체로 해석할 수 있다. 본 논문은 O'Neill의 후기작품의 하나인 The Iceman Cometh (1939)에서 Pipe dream이 인간에게 주는 의미를 고찰하고 등장인물을 분석하여 O'Neill 말년의 인생관을 밝히려는데 목적을 두었다. Pipe dream의 세계인 Harry Hope's Saloon에는 사회의 낙오자들이 모여 술과 황당한 꿈으로 살아가는 곳이다. 인생에 대한 희망을 상실한 사회 각계각층의 사람들이 Pipe dream에 사로잡혀 있는 상황을 O'Neill 은 현대 미국사회의 축소로 제시하여 문제점을 지적하고 이를 인류사회 전체의 병폐로 보았다. 작가는 이곳에 살아가는 Pipe dreamer 들을 인간세계의 기본인물로 나타내어 이 작품의 내용이 인간의 보편적인 상황임을 제시한다. 그는 인간을 "거짓"의 Pipe dreamer으로 "진실"을 망각하여 살아가는 존재로 보고 이것이 제거될 때 삶의 희망이 상실되어 죽음만을 기다리는 상황에 이르게 된다고 하였다. 즉 삶은 pipe dream으로 지속되는 illusion이며 이로부터 벗어난 상황인 reality는 죽음을 의미하게 된다. 그러기 때문에 사람은 결국 누구나 pipe dreamer라는 것이다. O'Neill은 서로 다른 인생관을 가지고 있는 Hickey와 Larry의 언쟁을 통하여 pipe dream의 필요성 유무를 논의한다. Hickey는 pipe dream을 쓸모없는 자기기만으로 보고 인간은 이로부터 벗어난 진실의 세계에서 마음의 평정을 찾아 살아가야 한다고 주장한다. 반면 Larry는 인간이 평정을 가지고 살 수 있는 것은 pipe dream을 통해서 만이 가능하다고 말한다. 두 사람의 견해를 통하여 인간의 양면성을 알 수 있다. pipe dreamer의 pipe dream 속에 존재하는 Evelyn과 Rosa는 각자 나름대로의 소명의식과 자기헌신으로 살아간다. Evelyn은 인간은 무한히 선해질 수 있다는 신념에서 방탕한 남편 Hiokey를 한없이 용서하게 되나 오히려 그로 하여금 수치감을 주어 증오의 대상이 된다. 반면 Rosa는 사회를 개혁 하겠다는 정치의식에 사로잡혀 무정부주의 운동에 열렬하게 헌신하지만 아들 Parritt와 연인 Larry의 불만과 갈등을 불러 일으킨다. 인생의 모든 가치를 pipe dream으로 간주하며 인간을 허황된 생각에 사로잡혀 있는 존재로 보는 O'Neill의 인생관은 비관적이다. 과거의 인간에 심령을 안정시켜주던 신이 없는 현대인에게 작가는 연민을 느끼고 이들에게 pipe dream이란 새로운 대상을 제공하였다. 고통의 세계에서 살아가는 현대인에게 이 고통을 망각할 수 있는 방법으로 제시하고 있는 것이 곧 pipe dream이라고 해석된다.;Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) endlessly experimented with the play throughout his life. He introduced the ideas and dramatic techniques of Greek and modern European drama on the American stage, diversified the subjects by applying psychological and philosophical concepts in his works, and changed the style of expression to realism, naturalism, expressionism and symbolism. His works generally dealt with the consistent theme: a quest for life. Therefore, the diversity of O'Neill's work can be considered as a process of searching for the meaning of life. This paper is to study O'Neill's latest view of life by analysizing the meaning of pipe dream reflected in one of his final plays, The Iceman Cometh (1939). The background of this work, Harry Hope's Saloon, is the world of pipe dreams where everyone lives in vain hope. This helpless place is presented as a microcosm of modern society that everyone loses his soul and is possessed with self-delusion. All the people gathered in this saloon are down-and-outers of society. The pipe dreamers who would die without their dreams shows that man is a deluded being as long as he lives. O'Neill discusses various problems of life by presenting the people who have different standpoints of life. There are long arguments about a pipe dream between Hickey who regards it as useless, and Larry who believes it harmless. Finally, both of the debators become tragic by finding out that their ideas are based on their pipe dream. The author deals with the problem of love through two women, Evelyn and Rosa. Evelyn, goodness herself, forgives her prodigal husband, Hickey, endlessly, but makes him ashamed and guilty. Rosa, political reformer, devotes herself to Anarchist Movement. But She is betrayed by her lover, Larry, and her son, Parritt, whose love is rejected by her social activities. In the past days man found a solace of life through God. The moderns who have scientific knowledge about the universe and human beings, can not receivs comfort from God for the pain or life any longer. O'Neill points out the sickness of today, and he regards man as the misbegotten who has to live in this suffering world. He presents the moderns pipe dream which takes the place of God, as a means to survive without pain in helpless society.
