Virginia Woolf 小說에 나타난 vision and design 硏究

Abstract

Virginia Woolf tried to search for the meaning of life, simultaneously to discover the new and aesthetic modes of novel which express the true understanding of life itself. The revolution of literary concept in the twentieth century has begun to focus on the inner world of human heing. So that there has been the variety of literary forms and changes in modern literary fashion, Especially modern novelist not only used the poetic symbols and images and musical effect, but also mixed the artistic qualities of the painting with the novel to convey the evanescent and fantastic stream of consciousness. Woolf was more sensitive to such as the era's spirit than any other writers. She endeavoured to capture momentary insights, called "vision of life", which character's mind in fiction reconized in ordinary day. At the same time, she effetively, represented and explicated such as the vision by the method of repeating symbols and images, besides they are organized in the carefully disigned framwork of whole structure. It Might be said that Woolf's unique method of are was the influence of the Post-Impressionism. So to speak, the lasting values in art are not the shifting details and colors on the surfaces of things, but rather in the formal and permanent pattern that art must try to achieve. Therefore, Woolf challenged to create the suggestive symbolic form the reveal the true meaning of life in her every work. In Mrs. Dalloway (1925) Woolf achieved the first successful "New Novel" to unify between the emotional content and form. To the Lighthouse (1927), which remains Woolf's finest achievement has almost completely form and meaning one to accomodate "the vision of art and life, as that is presented more complicate but more impersonal, to a well-designed symbolic structure. Specially in it we have the significant figure of Lily Briscoe, the artist whose ideas about art are identical with those of Woolf herself. So then, as a novelist Woolf tried to fulfill the complete reconciliation of life and art in this novel just as the painter, Lily Briscoe captures her ultimate vision on convas. Therefore, Woolf could provide such the novel as an artistic genre the profound definition and the new artistic possibilities.;Virginia Woolf는 삶의 의미를 추구하는 동시에 그것을 진실되게 보여줄 수 있는 새롭고 예술적인 소설 형태를 발견하려 했다. 20C 문학개념의 혁신은 인간의 내면세계에 초점을 맞추므로써 시작되었으며, 그에 따라 문학의 표현양식에도 다양한 기법상의 변화를 가져왔다. 특히 현대 소설가들은 소설의 변화무쌍하고 순간적인 의식의 흐름을 보여줄 수 있기 위해 詩的인 상징과 이미지, 음악적 효과까지 사용하였을 뿐 아니라 회화 (繪畵)의 예술적 요소까지 혼합시켰다. Woolf는 이러한 시대적 정신에 누구보다도 민감하였다. 그녀는 소설의 人物들이 평범한 일상의 삶 속에서 깨닫는 순간적인 통찰, 다시 말해 "삶의 vision"을 붙잡으려 했다. 동시에 그녀는 이러한 vision을 상징과 이미지의 반복에 의해 효과적으로 제시하며 또 분명하게 해주고 있다. 더욱이 이들은 주도면밀하게 구상된 소설 전체의 구조속에 놓이게 된다. 이러한 Woolf의 독창적인 예술의 시도는 당대 후기인상주의 예술관에서 영향을 받았다. 즉 예술의 영원한 가치는 표면적인 것들의 색깔이나 상세한 묘사 등에 있는 것이 아니라 그것이 이루려한 내적 형태속에 있다는 것이다. 그리하여 Woolf는 그녀의 모든 작품을 통해 진정한 삶의 의미를 제시할 수 있는 상징적인 소설형태를 이루려 했다. Woolf는 Mrs. Dalloway(1925)에서 감정적인 내용과 형태의 완전조화라는 "new novel"을 최초로 성공시켰다. 또 그녀의 걸작품인 To the Lighthouse(1927)에서는 "삶과 예술의 vision"이라는 좀 더 복잡하지만 더욱 초월적인 주제를 잘 짜여진 상징적 구조속에 훌륭히 구사시키므로써, 형식과 의미가 완전히 하나로 이룰 수 있었다. 특히 여기서 Lily Briscoe라는 중요한 人物을 통해 그녀의 예술관이 바로 Woolf 자신의 것과 동일함을 알 수 있다. 즉 화가인 Lily Briscoe가 화폭위에 그녀의 궁극의 "vision"을 포착하듯이 소설가로서 Woolf는 소설을 통해 삶과 예술의 완전 화합을 제시하려 했다. 이로써 Woolf는 하나의 예술쟝르로써의 소설에 의미 깊은 정의와 새로운 예술적 가능성을 부여할 수 있었다.
