- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis is to show that many of the structural conditions proposed in Chomsky's GB theory can be defined more correctly in terms of the notion of C-Command than that of Unambiguous Path.
In chapter Ⅱ, I investigate the role of C-Command as a structural condition. C-Command was in troduced as a structural condition on semantic interpretation by Reinhart(1976). It plays an important role in the C-Command Restriction in Reinhart(1976). It also plays a crucial role in Chomsky's government and binding theory(GB-theory).
In chapter Ⅲ, an attempt is made to show the limitations of Kayne's(1981c) Unambiguous path as a structural condition in two respects : (ⅰ) the result of replacing C-Command in the Government, Case Theory, Binding Theory and the C-Command Restriction by Unambiguous Path is negative, (ⅱ) even if the Unambiguous Path is supplemented with some semantic information, its result is still negative. Therefore, C-Command cannot be replaced by Unambiguous Path.
In chapter Ⅳ, I point out some problems in Kayne(1981c) and show that derived nominals can be correctly predicted by the C-Command condition. Kayne(1981c) proposes that verbs subcategorizing two complements should be changed into the unambiguous structure with S-node intervening between the verb and its complements. This claim conflicts with the projection principle in the GB theory. Thus, Unambiguous Path cannot be a proper structural condition on derived nominals. On the other hand, derived nominals can be correctly explained by the GB theory based on the C-command condition without any change of the syntactic structure. Therefore, it is concluded that the structural condition on derived nominals should be C-Command rather than Unambiguous path.;본 논문의 목적은 Kayne(1981c)의 주장과는 달리, 구조적 조건(structural condition)이 UP(Unambiguous Path)보다는 C-Command(Constituent-Command)에 기초해야 함을 입증하는 데 있다.
*[α NP to VP]여과에서의 UP의 대치 결과는 긍정적이어서 문제가 되지 않으나, Government, 격이론, Binding이론과 C-Command 제한에서는 UP의 대치 결과가 부정적이며, 더우기 GB의 의미 정보로 UP를 보완한다 하더라도 영역(domain) 설정이 요구되는 C-Command 제한의 경우에는 여전히 UP의 대치 결과가 부정적이라는데 UP의 한계성이 있다.
