Faulkner작품에 나타난 가정안에서의 사랑의 문제

Abstract

Faulkner는 미국 남부를 작품의 소재로 하고 있으나 그의 작품에는 남부의 특수성을 초월하여 사랑이라는 인류의 보편적 진리가 흐른다. 그는 연인간의 낭만적 사랑에 관심을 갖기 보다는 정신적 유대감에 기반을 둔 인간간의 특히 가족간의 연민, 희생, 인내라는 점에서 사랑의 의미를 추구하고 있다. The Sound and the Fury는 몰락하는 남부 귀족계층인 Compson 가족을 다룬 작품이고 As I Lay Dying은 가난한 남부의 농부계층인 Bundren 가족을 그린 작품이다. 그러나 이 두 작품에는 특정한 사회계층의 문제를 넘어서 가정 안에서 사랑의 결여가 미치는 파괴적 결과가 중심주제로 부각되고 있다. Faulkner는 자녀들이 그릇된 원인은 부모들의 사랑의 실패에 있다고 본다. 가정에서 사랑의 원천이 되어야 할 어머니들인 Mrs. Compson과 Addie는 이기적 집착과 자녀들에 대한 편애로 가족들을 희생시킨다. 또한 가장의 역할을 수행해야 할아버지들인 Mr. Compson과 Anse는 각기 술과 허무적 인생관으로 현실을 도피하거나 게으르고 위선적이어서 자녀들에게 무력한 존재들이다. 부모의 사랑을 받지 못하고 자란 양가의 자녀들은 정상적으로 성장하지 못하고 왜곡되어 있으며 형제간에 이기적 태도로 인해 서로 소외되거나 증오감을 나타낸다. 또한 이들은 각자의 삶에 있어서 비인간화, 성적방종, 자살, 정신적 붕괴 등으로 파멸하게 된다. 결국 양가는 가족들에게 행복과 안정감을 심어주는 가정의 기능을 상실하고 파멸과 불모로 이끄는 "Waste Land"로 화하고 있다. Faulkner는 이와 같이 사랑의 왜곡과 부재로 인해 파괴되는 가정을 보여줌으로써 사람의 중요성을 한층 더 부각시킨다. 그러나 그는 단순히 사랑의 부정적 측면을 보여주는데 머무르지 않고 Dilsey를 통해 인간이 영속할 수 있는 긍정적인 사랑의 힘을 제시해 준다. Compson가와 Bundren 가의 이기적 세계는 서로를 고립시키고 불모와 파멸로 이끌지만 Dilsey를 통해 보여주는 연민, 희생, 인내는 이러한 "Waste Land"를 딛고 일어설 수 있는 새로운 삶과 구원의 힘을 주고 있다.;The background of Faulkner's novels is the South in the United States, but in the deep stream of his novels we can find the universal truth - love - which goes beyond the particular problems of the South. Faulkner is concerned about spiritual love in connection with compassion, sacrifice and endurance in human relationship, especially in a family rather than in a romantic or sensual sense between lovers. The Sound and the Fury is a story about the Compsons, a southern aristocratic family in dissolution and As I Lay Dying is a story about the Bundrens, a southern agricultural poor family. But the main concern of these two novels is the destructive effect of the deprivation of love within a family rather than problems occurring in a particular class of people. In each work, defects in parental love are largely or completely responsible for the problems of their children. Mrs. Compson and Addie, who should be a source of love in their families as the mothers, sacrifice the whole family because of their stubborn self-interests and favoritism towards their children. Mr. Compson and Anse, who should be the heads of their families, are quite helpless in preventing the ruin of their children because of alcoholism and nihilism, resulting in escape from reality, or because of indulgence and hypocrisy. The children of both families growing up without parental love, cannot grow normally and their personalities are distorted. They are isolated or hate each other with their selfish attitudes. They all destroy their lives through inhumanity, promiscuity, suicide, or mental breakdown. Both families lose function of giving happiness and security to their members and turn out to be "Waste Land" leading to sterility and destruction. Thus Faulkner emphasizes the importance of love by showing the families undergoing destruction because of distortion or lack of love. He does not simply show the negative side of love but shows the enduring power of love through Dilsey. While the selfishness of the Compsons and the Bunderns makes them isolated from each other and leads them to destruction, the compassion, sacrifice and endurance which are shown by Dilsey provide us with the power of life and resurrection to overcome the "Waste Land".
