T. S. Eliot의 Four Quartets

Abstract

Four Quartets is known as Eliot's ripest, profoundest, and most complex poem. The depictions on the desolate phases of the times, or the mood tinged with gloomy, irony, and despair, charateristics of his previous poems, are no longer shown in this poem; instead, the modulated meditations and philosophi calm take place. In Four Quartets, Eliot explores the subject of 'Time' and 'Eternity'. The world of 'Time' is that of flux and change, oppositions, contradictions, and conflict. Whereas, the oppositions--death and life, the beginning and the end, light and darkness, the movement and the stillness--are reconciled harmoniously and become one in the world of 'Eternity.' 'Eternity' is immanent in 'Time', perceived only in a moment. The way to spiritual redemption and purification of the soul is to realized this moment of eternity in our lives. In Four Quartets, Eliot gropes the order and harmony beyond the conflict and the disorder; he tries to apprehend 'Eternity' in moment; that is to illuminate the law of macrocosm into the microcosmic world.;Four Quartets에서 Eliot는 Heraclitus의 流動과 變化의 철학을 배경으로 '시간'과 '영원'의 문제를 탐구한다. 宇宙萬物은 유동과 변화 속에 있다. 그러나 변화의 운동은 大宇宙의 법칙인 'Logos'안에서 일어나며 변화 속에 질서와 조화가 있다. Four Quartets에서는 Logos가 'the still point or the turning world'로 나타난다. 'the turning world'는 변화와 유동의 시간세계요 모순과 대립이 얽힌 경험의 세계이다. 'the still point'는 질서와 조화세계의 中心点이며 '시간'과 '영원'이 교차점이다. 'The still point'안에서 삶과 죽음, 시작과 종말, 빛과 어둠, 운동과 정지 등 모든 대립은 비로소 조화를 이루고 화합한다. 현대 물질문명 속에서 인간은 시간에 얽매여 의미를 파악하지 못 한채 미하고 공허한 삶을 살고 있다. 이들에게 필요한 정신적 구원은 일상적인 시간 속에서 영원을 인식하여 영혼의 淨化를 꾀하는 것이다. Eliot은 Four Quartets를 통해 모순과 갈등의 대립을 넘어선 질서와 조화를 모색하며 순간 속의 영원을 찾고 小宇宙(microcosm)에서 大宇宙(macrocosm)의 법칙과 질서를 밝혀내려 한다.
