Abstract

Contemporary English novel is an extension of realism integrating the nineteenth-century real ist tradition and the postmodernist experiment. Parody plays a special part in this integration. John Fowles's Re French Lieutenant's Woman is a good example of this characteristic. This dissertation explores how Fowles combines nineteenth-century realistic techniques with those of postmodernism by parody and concludes that this novel is a pioneering achievement which opens up. new possibilities to the sphere of contemporary fiction. Before analysing the work itself, an attempt at a study on parody and realism was made. Mimesis, creation of a convincing illusion of reality, is one of major characteristics of the nineteenth-century real ism. It is based on the belief that ultimate and immutable reality exists and Art should imitate such reality. In addition, realism includes clear description of characters on the ground of humanism, story-telling, author's instructive intent and the omniscient narrator as major conventions. Parody requires redefinition, because it still carries negative connotations which place it below serious works. Modern parody is one of the major forms of metafictional self-reflexivity. It becomes a creative approach to tradition and a method of inscribing continuity while permitting a critical distance between the past and the present. It offers a model for the reorganization of the past through "repetition with critical difference". In both form and content, this novel presents a technique of parody, by which Fowles manages to alter conventional realism to the taste of our own age. Regarding the form, he destroys the fictional illusion of reality and erases the boundary between reality and fiction through frame-breaking to slough off 'mimesis'. This is based on Fowles's postmodernist awareness that fiction and reality are both fictional constructions, and that there is no simple dichotomy between reality and fiction. Fowles uses other post-modernist techniques such as authorial presence, multiple endings, inter-textuality and digressions. Nevertheless, he deliberately uses modified realist conventions such as full characterization, the intrusive omniscient narrator, and story-tel1ing. In addition, the content of the novel revolves around the development of Charles's character. Fowles describes the spiritual and intellectual transformation of Charles with a humanistic view, Fowles, however, combines the older humanism with a modern view of human condition and expands a nineteenth-century humanism to a twentieth-century existentialism. Also this novel establishes itself as a quite different version of Buildungroman-plot of Victorian novel in the sense that Charles's development assisted by the 'modern' character Sarah allows him surpass the limit of the Victorian state of mind. Recent novels since the late 1970s explores ways to overcome the crisis confronted by modern fiction with merging traditional literary concerns and experimentalism. John Fowles의 The French Lieutenant's Woman은 현대 영국 소설의 이러한 경향을 가장 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 본 논문은 Fowles가 이 소설을 통해 19세기 리얼리즘의 요소와 포스트모더니즘의 요소를 어떻게 결합시키고 있는지를 살펴보고, 그것을 통해 이 소설이 현대소설의 위기에 하나의 해답을 제시한 작품이라는 결론을 도출하고자 한다. 19세기 리얼리즘 소설의 패러디를 통해 소설의 새로운 영역을 개척한 The French Lieutenant's Woman의 분석을 위해서는 리얼리즘의 요소에 대한 고찰과 패러디에 대한 정의가 선행되어야 한다. 19세기 리얼리즘의 요소로는 객관적인 리얼리티의 존재에 대한 확신을 바탕으로 하는 모방이론, 시간적 인과관계에 따른 story-telling, 휴머니즘에 입각한 선명한 인물묘사, 교훈적 요소, 전지적 작가 시점 등을 꼽을 수 있을 것이다. 현대소설에서 패러디란 과거작품이나 전통에 대한 거부나 조롱이 아닌, 전통의 변형을 통한 연속이나 확장의 의미로 사용된다. The French Lieutenant's Woman은 형식과 내용 양면에서 19세기 리얼리즘의 전통을 수용하면서 현대로 확장시키는 패러디를 보여주고 있다. 형식면에서 Fowles는 리얼리티와 허구가 구분할 수 없는 것이라는 포스트모던한 인식을 바탕으로, 리얼리티와 허구의 경계를 흐리며 리얼리즘의 모방이론을 벗어난다. 그러나 story-telling, 전지적 작가 시점 등 리얼리즘의 다른 요소들은 현대에 맞게 수정해 사용하고 있다. 내용면에서도 휴머니즘을 바탕으로 Charles라는 인물의 성격발전을 다루고 있지만, 그의 성장이 빅토리아 시대를 벗어나 있는 Sarah를 통해 그 시대를 뛰어넘는 것이라는 점에서 빅토리아 시대 성장소설과는 다른 점을 보여준다. 1980년대 이후의 소설은 전통에 대한 무조건적 거부와 실험을 위한 실험에서 벗어나, 과거의 전통적인 소설이 가지고 있던 장점들을 수용하고 그 위에 현대적인 요소들을 결합시켜 현대소설이 직면한 위기를 극복하려는 움직임을 보여준다. 1969년에 발표된 The French Lieutenant's Woman은 19세기 리얼리즘의 요소와 현대의 실험적인 요소를 패러디를 통해 결합시켜 소설의 새로운 가능성을 열어놓으면서, 현대소설이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한 작품이라 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
