Herzog의 희극적 요소와 의미

Abstract

Saul bellow intends to clarify in what form a life can be justified in contemporary society. While opposing to modernism for its indiscriminate acceptance of apocalyptic view of the world and its indulgence in unearned bitterness, he recommends courage to face the harsh realities and to affirm life as a way of meaningful life. Presenting a hero who gets through crisis and realizes his meaningful life, Saul Bellow suggests that there is still a fair chance for salvation. Such attitude of Bellow's can be interpreted as basically inclined to comedy rather than tragedy. This thesis aims to analyze the comic elements and their meaning in one of his works, Herzog. Herzog, using the lens of the present, analyzes and satirizes his objectified self of the past. His satire upon himself helps him escape from his self-glorification and his dependant, evasive and masochistic tendencies, and finally helps him emerge as a maturer person. His satire on his surrounding world of chaos, on the other hand, analyzes and criticizes hopeless aspects of society and its value system and philosophy; and helps him face realities more pliably. The process of Herzog's convalescence and maturing after shattering experience shows a comic spirit. He tides over the crises which has overhung him and recovers his sanity. Shoving off the death obsession, Herzog develops into a "comic man" who celebrates life and the significance of existence. His reorientation to life begins with his recognition of absurdities of life. A life is something unknowable that his intellectual work cannot gasp. This new recognition of reality which begins at the court room scene discloses that his "ideal construction" was not rectified by realities. Stepping in the boundary of reality, he modestly chooses a meaningful life within his given condition-humanity and community. Herzog's joy and satisfaction of his existence felt in the last scene come after his hard struggle against the menacing forces to his life; and can be equated with the joy of comedy which can be obtained by a temporary triumph over the surrounding world. Bellow uses comedy as a means of showing how to live a meaningful life in a hazardous world of today. Like Jewish humor, his comedy reconciles the conflict between the ideal and the reality, becomes a means of getting through sordid realities. What is more, it shows, despite all the negative forces, life is still worth living. Bellow's comedy makes us accept life as a mixture of contradictions-the impurity of it, the tragedy of it, and the hope of it.;Saul Bellow는 현대 상황에서 어떤 형태의 삶이 정당화될 수 있는지를 밝히려 하였다. 그는 음울한 현대 사회의 양상들에 절망하고 인간은 거기서 회복할 수 없다는 비관적 생각들에 대항하여, 불완전한 현실 세계를 직시하고도 삶을 긍정할 수 있는 용기를 높이 평가하였다. 또한 그는 위기를 극복하고 의미있는 삶을 실현하는 주인공을 통하여 인간과 삶의 가능성이 고갈되지 않았음을 시사한다. 본 논문은 이러한 Bellow의 작품 세계를 comedy라는 준거체계 속에 놓고, 그의 작품 Herzog에 나타나는 희극적 요소와 의미의 분석을 목적으로 하였다. Herzog는 현재라는 렌즈를 통하여 과거의 자신을 객관적으로 분석하여 희극적으로 풍자하고 있다. 그의 스스로에 대한 풍자는 자아에의 집착과 의존적, 회피적, 피학적 경향에서 벗어나 더 나은 Herzog로 성숙하게 한다. 그의 풍자는 자신을 둘러싼 외부 세계에도 가해져 암울한 사회 제반 양상들과 이것을 뒷받침하는 현대 사회의 가치와 철학까지 분석, 비판함으로써 이런 상황들을 대처하고 극복할 수 있게 해준다. Herzog의 풍자는 그의 의미 있는 삶의 실현을 방해하는 내적, 외적 요인들을 인식시키고, 현실에 더욱 유연하게 대처 할 수 있도록 발전시킨다. Herzog의 회복과 성숙에서 나타나는 정신 역시 comedy와 관련을 맺고 있다. 그는 자신의 삶에 닥쳐온 위기를 극복하여 정신적 온전함을 회복하며, 죽음에 대한 강박관념에서 벗어나 삶과 존재를 찬양하는 comic hero로 성장하고 있다. 그의 삶으로의 방향 전환은 삶의 설명할 수 없는 이중성을 인식하면서부터 시작된다. 삶이란 그의 知的 작업이 포용할 수 없는 不可知性의 것이며, 법정장면에서 시작된 현실 인식은 그의 "ideal construction"이 현실의 교정을 받지않은 것이었음을 인식시켜 주었다. 현실의 경제 안으로 들어오면서, 그는 겸허하게 자신에게 주어진 조건, 인간성과 현실의 공동체 내에서의 의미있는 삶을 선택하게 된다. Herzog가 마지막에 느끼는 기쁨과 존재에 대한 만족은 자신의 삶을 위협하던 것에 대하여 어렵게 투쟁하여 얻은 것이며, 이것은 고통스런 외부 세계를 극복하고 삶의 가치를 긍정한 때 comedy가 전달하는 기쁨과 동일한 것이다. Bellow는 comedy라는 방편을 사용하여 위협적인 현대 상황 속에서 의미 있는 삶의 실현의 방법을 보여주고 있다. 그의 comedy는 유태인의 웃음과 같이 이상과 현실 사이의 갈등을 중재하여 불완전한 현실 세계를 극복하는 수단이 되고 있으며, 그 모든 부정적 요소에도 불구하고 여전히 삶과 인간에 가치가 있음을 보여주고 있다. Bellow의 comedy는 인간에게 어쩔 수 없이 주어지는 삶과 현실이라는 혼합물-그것의 불순성과, 그것의 비극과, 그리고 그것의 희망까지도 받아들일 수 있게 하는 것이다.
