Joseph Conrad의 Nostromo 연구

Abstract

Nostromo는 '물질적 이익'만을 무자비하게 추구하는 사회 속에서 개인들이 당하는 곤경을 그리고 있다. 등장인물들은 스스로의 삶에 존재 의의를 부여할 수 있는 주관적인 가치들을 추구한다. 그러나 이는 외부 현실과 마찰을 빚게 되고 상황이라는 계기의 적극적인 작용 하에서 모든 인물들은 자기 실현에 실패하는 시련을 겪게 된다. Charles Gould는 '물질적 이익의 신장을 통한 진보'라는 자본주의 이데올로기를 내면화하고 이를 생의 가치로 추구하는 가운데 아내를 희생시키고 자신은 비인간화 되어간다. 뿐만 아니라 '정의'를 가져다 줄 것이라던 그의 은광은 Sulaco사회에서 도덕적 부패의 근원이 되어간다. Nostromo는 가장 비정치적인 인물이지만 '물질적 이익'을 주도하는 세력들에 이용당함으로서 자신의 이해와 상반되는 계층의 하수인 노릇을 하게되고 뒤늦게 깨달음을 얻지만 이번에는 은의 위력과 대면해서 자신의 도덕적 의지를 행사하지 못함으로서 파멸되어간다. Decoud 역시 은을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 정치적 상황의 회오리 속에서 회의주의라는 자신의 소신을 지탱시켜나가지 못하고 사건의 중심에 휘말린 채 비극적 죽음을 맞게 된다. 이들에 반하여 Dr. Monygham과 Emilia는 인간주의적 자세를 잃지 않음으로 해서 '물질적 이익'의 반대 세력이 되고 있다. 그러나 그들이 얻은 이해와 사랑이라는 가치는 현실 속에서 너무 무력하기 때문에 Sulaco사회에 만연한 물질적 이익의 부정적인 영향을 극복할 대안은 되지 못한다. 외적 상황에 휘말려 파멸해 가는 인물들의 삶은 Conrad의 비관적 인간관·역사관을 표출해 주고 있다. 등장 인물들은 상황이라는 궁극적 한계 내에서 움직일 뿐이며, 그들의 어떤 주관적인 노력도 역사의 진보에 보탬이 되지 못한 채 무화되어 버리고 있다. Nostromo에서 등장 인물들의 파멸은 근대 자본주의의 동인이라고 할 '물질적 이익'을 매개로 하고 있기 때문에 이 작품은 당대사회-제국주의라는 형태로 그 모순을 표출하고 말았던-에 대한 전면적인 비판을 담고 있다.;Nostromo deals with the corruptive forces related to material interests and political anarchy caused by the silver from San Tome´ mine. Every person in this novel is represented as alienated from himself, from others, and from public affairs. Nostromo is the story of men who, while seeking to define their own lives in bold and heroic terms, become entrapped by the circumstances that they seek to control and the political activity in which they engage. Not without their own obsessions and moral weakness, the Goulds, Decoud, Nostromo are engulfed by politics created by the insistent demands of materialism. In this novel even the love and compassion are not posited as possibilities to redeem the negeative effect of 'material interest', though they are suggested to have compensatory value. This novel reflects Conrad's skeptic view on man and history. Conrad sees the individual as a tragic being who is canght up in a historical process which is determined to extinguish his identity and nullify his will Through the tragedies of individuals, Conrad criticizes the 'material interest' on which modern capitalism (and imperialism) is based.
