Abstract
In Light in August, Faulkner deals with alienation and the solution of it. In Jefferson, dead institutions and customs impose limitations on individuals. A whole system of fanatical racial and religious beliefs makes characters abnormal and isolated from the community and from Life. In case of Joanna and Hightower, they have been crippled by their personal inheritance related to social conditions of Jefferson. They, because of certain warping influences in childhood, becomes fetter ed to the past. Their predecessors made him lose the power of choice, of free will. But unlike Joanna, Hightower returns to life. He delivers Lena's child. This act of giving life to Lena's child becomes symbolic of Hightower's restoration in life. Christmas' alienation is only the most extreme of a whole series of such alienations. Traumatic experiences in childhood which are related to racial prejudice and hell-fire Protestantism make him lock into himself and search for personal identity. The social conditions make of him a scapegoat and prevent his coming into any kind of mature awareness of his personal identity. Yet Light In August does not end on this note, but offers hope. Lena is the symbol of universal truths. Concluding the novel with the comic story of Lena and Byron, Faulkner gives final emphasis to an affirmation of the possibilities of life.
