Matthew Arnold의 비평 연구

Abstract

시인에서 출발한 Matthew Arnold가 비평가로서 비평을 쓰기 시작한 것은 시대적 고민을 해결하려는 시도였다. Arnold는 비평을 사회에 신선한 사상이 유통되게 하고, 사상의 질서를 수립하며, '세상에서 알려지고, 생각되어온 것 중 최선의 것' 을 전달하려는 'disinterested endeavour' 라고 생각했다. 그는 비평은 창작 활동을 원만히 할 수 있는 분위기를 창조해준다고 말했다. Arnold는 시를 삶을 해석하고, 평가할 수 있는 '인생 비평'으로 보았다. 인간은 시를 통해 삶에 대한 인식과 'how to live'에 대한 삶의 방법을 터득할 수 있게 되는 것이다. 더 나아가서 '인생 비평'으로서의 '우수한 시'는 인간을 위로하고 지탱해 주고, 형성하고 또 정신적 지주가 될 수 있다고 Arnold는 믿었다. 이런 '우수한 시'의 역할 때문에 Arnold는 '우수한 시'의 필요성을 깨달았고 따라서 '우수한 시'가 가져야할 요건을 생각해 보았다. 그는 시의 내용에 있어 시인의 'sincerity'에서 나오는 'High Seriousness'를 요구했다. style에서는 'severity', 'simplicity' 그리고 'nobility'로 구성된 'Grand Style'를 요구했다. 그리고 이 두가지를 갖춘 우수한 시의 구체적인 예를 작가들의 작품에서 선택한 'Touch stone'을 통해 제시해 주었다. Arnold는 시와 비평의 중요성을 강조했고, 이것을 통해 'the best'를 찾고자 노력했다. 특히 Arnold는 시와 삶과의 관계에 대해 깊게 생각했다. Arnold가 비평과 시의 중요성을 인식한 것은 결국 누구나 인간성의 완전에 도달하고, 충실한 삶을 살 수 있는 사회를 이루기 위함이다.;Matthew Arnold tried to solve the problems of the Victorian age not as a poet but as a critic. The function of criticism, in Arnold's sense, is to create a currnet of fresh ideas, to establish an order of ideas, and to make 'the best that is known and thought in the world' prevail with disinterested endeavour. Besides, criticism makes a situation of which the creative power can profitably avail itself. 'Poetry is a criticism of life' is the most important dictum of Arnold's. Poetry can interpret and evaluate human life. Poetry can awaken the sense of our life and can help to solve the question "How to live?". Futhermore, he thought high criticism of life can console, sustain, form our life, and eventually supply a spiritual refreshment. Because of such a power of poetry, Arnold wanted 'the best poetry', and tried to device the criterion of it. In Arnold's opinion, the elements of 'the best poetry' are 'High Seriousness' and 'Grand Style'. High Seriousness comes from the poet's absolute sincerity and Grand Style is characterized by simplicity, severity and nobility. And he selected some passages from the works of the masters as 'touchstones' exemplifing high seriousness and grand style. Arnold emphasized the importance of poetry and criticism and showed great concern especially on the relation between human life and poetry. He thought poetry and criticism make 'the best ideas' prevail and make the society reach the state of harmonious inner perfection and full-development of humanity.
