Mrs. Dalloway에 나타난 Virginia Woolf의 소설 기법과 삶의 비젼

Abstract

V. Woolf의 작품에 있어서 주된 관심사는 삶이란 무엇인가 라는것에 대한 추구와 그것을 어떻게 하면 독자에게 효과적으로 전달해 줄 수 있는가에 있다. 소설에서 인간 내면세계의 실재를 포착하는 것은 작가나 독자 모드에게 어려운 일이다. 그러므로 Woolf는 난해한 작품을 읽는 독자의 이해를 돕고 주제의식을 일관성 있게 전달하기 위해 독특하고 다양한 기법을 사용한다. 그녀는 개인의 독단으로 빠지는 것을 싫어하여 내용에서 뿐 아니라 기법 면에서도 끊임없이 공감과 이해를 도출해 내고자 한다. 이러한 노력으로 Woolf는 자연히 Joyce처럼 의식이 흐르는 대로 써내려 가는 방식을 피하고, 이해하기 쉽게 인물의 배후에서 설명해 주는 방법을 사용한다. Mrs. Dalloway에서 Clarissa가 도달한 비젼의 핵심적인 내용은 삶과 죽음에 대한 통찰이다. 거기에는 작가의 인생관이 반영되어, 자연히 자전적인 요소를 많이 포함하고 있다. Woolf는 insane Septimus를 통해서 sane Clarissa의 자살충동(death-wish)과 자기 포기적인 경향을 극단화시킨다. Septimus는 자신만의 의식세계에 갇혀 자연과의 합일을 추구하여 계시의 상태에까지 이르기는 하지만 타인과의 소통이 불가능한 'damned egoistical self'이다. Clarissa는 타인들로부터 자신을 지키려는 본능적 직감을 가지고 있으나 자신의 '영혼의 사생활'(privacy of the soul)을 지나치게 강조하여 스스로 고립된다. 그 고립감은 삶에 대한 환희 가운데에서도 순간 순가 그녀에게 죽음의 두려움을 갖게 한다. Clarissa는 시·공을 초월하여 타인과 의사소통 할 수 있다고 믿는데, 이러한 점을 통해서 Woolf는 고립과 죽음의 공포에 관한 문제를 가능한 해결하려 한다. 이같은 Woolf의 의도는 상징·이미지·모티프의 반복적 제시에 피해서 Clarissa와 Septimus가 동일 인물임을 부각시키고, 소설의 구조적· 주제적 발전이 Clarissa의 파티에 수렴되어 통합(unity)을 이루도록 한 점에서 뚜렷이 보여진다. Clarissa는 죽은 Septimus와의 영적 교감을 통해서, 죽음이 인생을 끝내지 않으며 남은자에 의해 삶은 계속될 것이라는 것, 즉 죽음이 삶의 일부분일 뿐이라는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 이러한 비젼은 Clarissa로 하여금 죽음에 대한 두려움을 극복하고 더욱 적극적인 삶을 살게 한다. 그러나 그 비젼의 순간은 짧고 잠정적이다. 그래서 그것은 끊임없이 재생되어야 한다. Woolf는 여기서 Septimus를 Clarissa의 대역므로 등장시키므로써 고립과 죽음의 공포를 극복하고 관용과 희생으로 타인과 조화로운 화합을 이루는 것을 궁극적인 삶의 비젼으로 제시하고 있다.;In her novels, V. woolf was chiefly interested in searching for that the meaning of life is and how to convey it effectively to her readers. By describing the fundamentally deranged stream of human consciousness with the variety and the distinction of techniques, woolf tried to help her readers understand her theme which mostly consists of her own view of life. The fact that the vision the heroine, Clarissa, achieves is the very core of Woolf's own view of life tells that Mrs. Dallaway is to some extent autobiographical. The point of Clarissa's vision is the matter of life and death. Through insane Septimus, wolf showed sane Clarissa the extremes of her death-wish and self-abandonment. Although Septimus, confining himself to his own individual world, seeks the unity with nature and succeeds in finding a vision, he realizes that his damned egoistical self which is unable to communicate which human beings is doomed to death. Clarissa is persistent in keeping her own perivacy of the soul by instinct, isolating herself from others. Her feel ing of isolation gives her the fear of death in tile center of ecstasy of life. Woolf tried to solve the problem of the fear of death and isolation through Clarissa who believes she can communicate with others off time and space. Woolf wanted to show Clarissa and Sertimus as the same person, though they had never met, never communicated, using symbols, images, and motif repeatedly. This intention of hers is clearly shorn at the party where the unity of Clarissa and Septimus is eventually made. At the party, Clarissa, finding the Alter-ago in Septinus who has just been reported to be dead, realizes that death is not the end of life, which will continue to be lived by the left behind, that death is just a part of life. This vision helps Clarissa overcome the fear of death and conduct of life. But such a vision is so transient that it has to be repeatedly re-found. Using Septimus as a substitute for Clarissa, Woolf wants to show us that, the final vision of life is to overcome the fear of death and isolation and establish harmony with others, shoring tolerance and self-sacrifice.
