Abstract

Eugene O'Neill finished only A Touch of the Poet in the cycle drama named by A Tale of Possessors Self-Dispossessed which dealt with the history of one Irish emigrant family. A Touch of the Poet is concerned with the relationship between man and society. In A Touch of the Poet, O'Neill's viewpoint shifts from the relationship between "man and God" to that of "man and man". Therefore A Touch of the Poet is to characterized by "an interlude". In this thesis, I have analyzed the process of pursuing self-awareness of the protagonist, Cornelius Melody. Melody' s "touch of the poet" has the twofold meaning - "poet and gentleman". Melody's "touch of the poet" desires for the social status as a "gentleman", but, on the other hand wants to keep up bib escape life of romantic "poet", Melody's "touch of the poet" with his sensitivity to experiences and his fantastic imagination has an attribute of a dreamer. Melody as a dreamer makes his self-image" a gentleman and an officer". But his self-image is not identified with the present as an inn keeper but with one of his past. His self-image is not accepted by society. Melody's "touch of the poet" defends his self-image from society and makes him satisfied with it. Melody's "touch of the poet" is qualified with the element of self-defence. "A touch of the poet", however, needs rather a isolated space not disturbed by other people than an association with others. The self-preservative space represented by "dining room" is the place to dissolve his conflict with his family caused by his lack of responsibility. Also in this place he identified himself with "Byronic hero". This identification means he knows that he is isolated by Yankee gentry to which he wants to belong and he isolates himself from Irish emigrants society. Therefore, "a touch of the poet" has two elements - defending and understanding his situation. When his self-protective space is collapsed by Mr. Harford, Yankee gentry, "a touch of the poet" becomes the means of disillusion to accept his situation as it is. Melody's "touch of the poet" which encourages his self-image in spite of knowing his present, breaks self-image and chooses the Irish emigrants society as his own society. The process of Melody's self-discovery is that of self-acceptance and that of self-realization to admit himself as a common man. In this thesis I have analyzed the nature of Melody's self-image and that of Melody's "touch of the poet". And I concluded that his breaking of self-image is to belong to his family and society.;Eugene O'Neill의 A Touch of the Poet은 미국으로 이민 온 아일랜드系 한 가정이 정착해 가는 과정을 소재로 한 A Tale of Possessors Self-Dispossessed 라는 cycle drama 에서 유일하게 완성된 작품이다. 사회속의 인간을 다루는 A Touch of the Poet은 "神과 인간의 관계"에서 "인간과 인간의 관계"로 O'Neill의 관점이 변화해갈 때 교량적 역할을 하는 막간극의 성격을 지닌다. 본 논문에서는 Cornelius Melody의 자아인식 과정을 그가 지닌 시인적 기질의 특성과 연관지어 분석하였다. Melody의 시인적 기질은 "Poet ana gentleman" 이라는 이중의 뜻을 지닌다. 그의 시인 기질은 "gentleman" 이라는 사회적 지위를 갈망하지만 한편으로는 낭만적 "시인"의 현실도피적인 삶을 지속하고자 한다. 과거 경험에 대한 민감성과 현실 초월적 상상력을 지닌 시인 기질은 과거의 한부분과는 일치되나 현실과는 유리된 "an officer and a gentleman"으로 자기 이미지를 정하는 몽상가적인 일면을 내포한다. 현실성이 결여된 시인적 기질은 자기 이미지를 보호하고 확신하는 자기방어요소가 되면서 동시에 사회와의 원만한 유대보다는 타인의 간섭을 받지 않는 자기만의 공간을 필요로 한다. 식당으로 제시되는 자기방어공간은 한 가정의 가장으로서의 책임감이 결여되었을 때 일어날 수 있는 가족과의 심리적 갈등을 해소시키는 장소이다. 이 공간에서 Melody는 자신을 "Byronic hero"와 일치시킨다. Melody가 자신을 "Byronic hero"와 동일시함은 자신이 속하기 원하는 "Yankee gentry'와 자신이 응당 소속되어야 할 아일랜드 이주민 사회로부터 이탈된 주변인으로 존재하고 있음을 스스로 알고 있다는 사실을 뜻한다. 시인적 기질은 자기방어요소인 동시에 현재 자신의 처지를 파악하는 요인이 된다. 자기방어공간이 Harford 家로 인해 와해될 때 시인적 기질은 현실을 인정하는 각성의 수단이 된다. 소외된 현실을 알면서도 가설적 자기 이미지에 몰입하던 Melody는 스스로 이미지를 깨고 자신이 소속되어야할 아일랜드 이민 사회의 한 구성원임을 인정하게 된다. Melody의 자아 발견은 결국 소외된 상태에 벗어나 아일랜드 평민으로서의 자기를 인식하는 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 Melody의 self-image와 그가 지닌 시인적 기질의 성격을 살펴보고, 내면세계의 모순으로 인해 Melody가 현실에 적응하지 못하는 양상을 분석하였다. 동시에 Melody가 자기 이미지를 깨는 것은 소원했던 가족과의 관계를 회복하고 아일랜드인 으로서의 연대감을 갖게 되는 것으로 보았다.
