Mourning becomes Electra에 나타난 O'Neill의 비극적 비젼

Abstract

O'Neill is a dramatist whose literary world consists mainly of examining various aspects of relationships in the human life. His chief fascination with out of all the existing relationships had been that of between 'man ＆ God." The linking thread to all his works are the endeavors to determine the fundamentality of the 'fate' that conditions human lives. This thesis explores into the conflicts of dualistic forces in Mourning Becomes Electra. Here the concept of 'fate' in the Greek tragedies are replaced by 'psychological fate' and the actions of the characters are seen to be triggered on by their inner psychological facts. The Puritanism of the Mannons works in repressing their natural vitality and makes way for tragedy when the repression manifests itself in forms of lust, hate and jealousy. Each character experiences the discord between their moral conciousness and their natural instincts and such disparity formulates into destructive forces working in the family and later in oneself. Although they yearn for the life in 'South Sea' where they will be free of conflicts and guilt. the strong current of their puritanical legacy absolves their spring of hope. Ezra's aspirations for a new life is obstructed by Christine, and Christine's desire for a passionate life with Adam is demolished by puritanical Lavinia. Orin ends in committing suicide when unable to emancipate himself from the curse of the family and Lavinia's desperate effects to live a full loving life is also depleted. This play ends in the pessimistic circumstance of isolation and death which is intensified further by the absence of the saving God. Nevertheless, O'Neill expresses the paradoxical victory of the spirit amidst the defeat brought by 'fate' through Lavinia. Her courageous determination to confront the illusions of romantic hopes and to stick through the curse of their family at all costs and taking the responsibility of her role in her own hands succeeds in showing the dignity of man with free-will. The tragic vision of O'Neill's outlook can be understood as the search for an answer to the sickness of modern man when deprived of spiritual guidance.;O'Neill은 인간과 인간과의 관계 또는 일련의 사회 제반 문제보다 '인간과 神'과의 관계에 흥미를 느꼈으며, 연극에서 그러한 점을 투영시켜야 한다는 소신을 관철시킨 미국의 독보적인 극작가이다. 그는 인간과 인간의 삶을 조건 지우는 '운명'이라는 본질적인 문제를 규명하려는 시도로 일관한다. 본 논문은 그의 야심작 Mourning Becomes Electra를 이원적 요소들 간의 갈등이라는 측면에서 고찰하였다. 이 극에서 희랍극의 운명의 개념은 '심리적 운명'으로 대치되고 있으며, 인물들의 행동들도 심리적 사실들로 야기되어진다. Mannon가의 청교주의는 자연스런 생명력을 억압함으로 Mannon가의 인물들을 비극으로 이끌어 가는 요인으로 작용하며, 억눌린 본능은 육욕과 증오, 질투의 형태로 나타난다. 각 인물들은 도덕적 양심과 본능사이의 부조화를 경험하며, 이러한 감정의 불균형은 가족 상호간의 파괴와 종국에 가서는 자신의 파멸을 초래한다. 이들은 갈등과 죄의식이 없는 'South Seas'에서의 삶을 열망하나 청교주의적 유산과 과거가 이들의 소망을 좌절시킨다. Ezra의 새로운 삶에의 욕구는 Christine에 의해 좌절되며, Mannon가를 벗어난 열정적인 삶을 Adam에게서 찾아보려던 Christine은 청교주의적 윤리관을 지닌 Lavinia에 의해 차단된다. Orin도 결국 가문의 저주를 벗어나지 못하고 내적 분열로 자살하며, 사랑이 충만한 삶을 향한 Lavinia의 필사적인 노력도 꺽이고 만다. 이 극은 Mannon가의 고립과 죽음이라는 암울한 상황으로 끝나며, 이 암울함은 이들을 구원할 神이 없다는 사실에서 더 가중된다. 그러나 인간은 운명에 패배 당할 수 밖에 없지만 정신적인 승리를 얻는다는 것을 O'Neill은 Lavinia를 통해서 제시하고 있다. 낭만적 꿈이 가지는 허상을 직시하고 가문의 저주를 자신이 감수해내겠다는 Lavinia의 용기있는 결단과 자신이 선택한 행동에 책임을 지는 모습은, 자유의지를 가진 한 인간의 본연의 존엄성(dignity)을 보여준다. O'Neill이 표출하고 있는 비극적 비젼은 정신적 지주를 상실하고 방황하는 현대인의 병폐를 해결하기 위한 가능성의 탐색이라는 점에서 의의를 가진다고 하겠다.
