William Golding의 작품에 나타난 疏外의 문제

Abstract

The world of William Golding's works which are characterized by the moral impact of Lord of the flies on the readers keeps its purity with distinguishing him from other contemporary writers. It is, in other words, that his point of view is always oriented toward the problem of the human nature which is more fundamental and root than the problem of society which is rather detailed and symptomatic. Founded on the original sin, Gelding's view of man makes him regard man as a morally diseased and depraved creation. Therefore, it is not the consequence of faulty social institution but the result of evil implied in the human nature itself that causes all the absurdity of human existence and chaos which are the hallmark of today's human condition. Two Great World Wars terminated the value trace of scientific liberalism that naively trusts in the progress of mankind in Gelding by the influence of his father and he replaced it with extraordinarily stark pessimistic view of man. Man's separation from God concomitant with Adam's disobedience is reflected all through the works of Gelding with humanistic interpretation and his works are tropological and various versions of man's first revolt to God. In Pincher Martin which has the skeletonized structure, Gelding' dramatizes how Pincher Martin who is self-oriented and the embodiment of greed separates himself from God that is equivalent of the absolute' other. In The Pynamid, rather loosely and less symbolically but with more casualty and familiarity, describes he the alienated human existence from one another in the complex field of life. By the way, the possibility of harmonious human relationship through love and communication is investigated by the author himself in this world of isolation. But the manifestation of the human consciousness symbolized by Babel Tower only leads to the human existence that we can guess from the collapse of the common language which is also affirmed in the story of Babel Tower. Also, the animosity to others that the individuality inevitably implies only results in the severe sense of division. This thesis tried to examine the present human condition as Gelding percepts with an emphasis on his pessimistic view of man. In chapter Ⅱ, the cause of isolation which is the result of man's Fall was investigated through Pincher Martin and The Pyramid that specifically represent the contemporary aspect of human life. As a conclusion, an attempt to 'set' Gelding in the history of English novel is to be made. It is certain that the uniqueness of his subject and his moral intensity as a writer place him among the most striking and significant writers of his generation.;Lord of the Flies의 도덕적 충격으로 특정지워지는 William Gerald Gelding의 작품세계는 그 후 현재에 이르기까지 그를 다른 작가들과 구별짓게 하며 계속되었다. Golding의 특징이란 바로 세부적이고 징후적이라 할 수 있는 사회의 문제보다 본질적이고 근원적인 人性의 문제에 관심을 경주하였다는 사실이다. Gelding은 기독교적 윈죄설에 입각한 인간관을 지녔기에, 인간이란 탄생과 더불어 도덕적으로 墮落한 存在라 보았다. 그리하여 인간존재의 부조리함, 질서의 붕괴로 말미암은 혼돈의 현 상황을 모순된 사회제도의 파급효과가 아니라 人性 자체에 함축되어있는 惡性의 결과로 보는 것이 Golding의 의견이다. Gelding은 兩大戰後 19세기적 안일한 진보에의 믿음(scientific liberalism)을 포기하고 유례 없이 엄격한 비관적 인간관을 제시하였다. Adam의 불복종에 기인하는 인간과 神의 관계단절은 문학적 해석과 더불어 여러 형태의 변형을 이루며 Gelding의 작품에 반영되었다. 골격적 구성을 지닌 Pincher Martin에서 Gelding은 自我와 貪慾의 화신인 Martin이 절대적 他者로서의 神에게서 분리되는 과정을 극화하였다. The Pyramid에서는 각 개인들 하나 하나가 복잡 다양한 삶의 현장에서 서로 遊離되어 존재하는 양상이 다소 느슨하고 비상징적이나 보다 일상적으로 묘사되었다. 한편 이렇게 단절된 상황에서, 작가에 의해 보다 완벽한 의사소통(communication)에 의한 조화로운 관계회복의 가능성의 길이 모색되었다. 그러나 바벨탑으로 상징되는 人間意識의 발로는 역시 바벨탑 이야기에 명시된 공동언어의 붕괴라는 결과가 함축하는 인간상황을 초래하며, 自意識이 불가피하게 포함하는 상대방에 대한 敵對感은 더욱 심각한 疏外感으로 매듭져질 뿐이었다. Golding의 비관적 인간관은 계속되는 것이다. 本槁에서는 원죄관에 입각한 Gelding적 비관주의에 촛점을 맞추며, 그가 파악한 현 인류의 상황을 고찰해 보고자 하였다. Ⅱ章에서는 疏外의 삶이라는 결과를 초래한 원인을 The Inheritors를 통하여 살펴보고자 하였으며, Ⅲ章에서는 현대를 배경으로 하여 게시된 두 流外의 삶의 양상을 Pincher Martin과 The Pyramid를 통하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 결론으로서, Gelding의 독특한 영역의 주제와 동시에 그의 열성적이고도 진지한 도덕적 관심이 마련해 준 자리를 영소설사의 흐름 속에 위치시켜보고자 하였다. 그는 그의 세대에서 가장 두드러지고 또 중요한 작가임에 틀림없다.
