Abstract

The Civil War, which ended in a victory for the North, brought a lot of changes to America. Especially in New York, there was a social conflict between Old New York, an older and conservative group, and New New York, the parvenus trying to find their way into the high Society. However, at the turn of the century these two groups found more affinity than difference. Conflict was lost in fusion. Edith Wharton understood it was materialism that put two groups together. The parvenus tried to set their foot in the Society and Old New York compromised and gave in to the money of New New York. Social position was something that could be bought and social relations between individuals were greatly conditioned by material interest. Wharton thought New York was a frivolous society on account of its pursuit of only money and pleasure. Her central concern was how the material culture of New York affected people and what important values were destroyed in it. Both The House of Mirth and The Custom of the Country are studies of those values destroyed in New York. Lily Bart in The House of Mirth is a social failure. As she follows her moral scruples and refuses to remain in the exchange system of New York, she is driven out of the Society and can't find any other place to live in. However, she is blessed to experience human solidarity, the central truth of human existence, which is denied to the frivolous people remaining in the House of Mirth. The Custom of the Country depicts the social ascent of Undine Spragg, a female representative of the parvenus. The high Society of New York, which expelled Lily Bart, now embraces Undine, a monstrous product of the social system, who has nothing but desires and a destructive will to satisfy them. Undine is a social success of New York, but she finds still unquenchable desire, not happiness. Lily Bart and Undine Spragg are two sides of the same coin. Lily's failure and Undine's success both testify to what is lost in New York's material culture: human solidarity. Wharton은 Lily Bart와 Undine Spragg의 삶을 통해 뉴욕의 물질주의 문화를 비판함과 동시에 인간의 도덕적 힘에 대한 믿음을 보여준다.
