Abstract
본 연구에서는 현재 교육적 위기에 처해있는 전통적 교육체제에 대한 방안으로서, 보다 적은 비용으로 보다 많은 학생에게 교육기회를 제공해 줄 수 있는 원격교육의 중요성을 인식하여 그 세계적인 현황과 매체활용을 중심으로 원격교육에 관한 문헌연구를 하였다. 원격교육은 지리적·경제적 조건, 연령등에 구애받지 않고, 정규교육을 받을 수 없거나 계속교육을 필요로 하는 자들에게 언제든지 높은 수준의 교육을 제공해 줄 수 있는 혁신적인 교육체제로서 간주된다. 이러한 형태는 세계 각 국에서 제각기 그나라 특성과 조건에 따라 다양하게 발전되어왔으며, 그에 따라 명칭도 다르게 불리워졌는데 최근에 이르러 원격교육이라고 통괄하여 사용하고 있다. 또한 점차 평생교육에 대한 인식과 함께 고등교육을 받고자하는 사람수가 증가하고 있는 추세에서 우선 대학수준의 원격교육기관의 확대가 요구되고 있으므로, 이미 성공적으로 원격교육을 수행하고 있는 영국의 개방대학을 비롯하여 미국·호주·일본·서독·우리나라의 현황을 살펴보았다. 그리고, 교수·학습과정에서 효율적인 학습을 유도하는 매체 활용에 관해선, 현재 활용되고 있는 매체와 더불어 최근 전자·통신기술의 발달로 생겨난 새로운 매체들의 종류 및 특성, 활용 가능성에대해 살펴보았다. 아직까지 원격교육이란 용어는 비교적 생소하지만, 종래의 방송·통신교육보다 더욱 현대적이고 다양한 교수수단을 동원하여, 교수·학생간의 상호작용적인 교수를 보조해 줌으로써 더욱 큰 교육효과를 가져 올 수 있다고 본다.;Today our conventional education is in crisis because of rapid explosion of knowledge, increasing number of students, short supply of school buildings and high qualified teachers and money problem. To solve this problem, innovative educators make an attention to the distance education, which can bring more education to more people in wider range and greater depth with the help of various media. In another words, distance education is a form of education which can bring equal education to those who may not benefit from direct teaching by teachers at educational facilities for a given period, due to reasons of financial, geographical, or age. Distance education is a generic term that included the range of teaching-learning strategies referred as correspondence education, external studies, extra-mural studies, non-campus school, school-extension program, open learning, out-reach and off-campus programmes, etc. The advent of distance education is said to be revolutionary change in the educational system in that it promises the quality of educational opporunity. Equal opportunity for education means that a man should be able to take advantage of a form of education, equivalent to that of schools whenever he so wishes. As the society has been changed from labor-intensive through technology-intensive to knowlege-intensive industrial society, the traditional system simply cannot produce enough highly-trained manpower in the numbers required, nor of the qualities useful to the developing society. And the phenomenal increase in university population means the popularization of higher education and a change in the function of higher education. In this respect, a distance education at the university level is considered importantly. So I've chosen five foreign distance teaching universities and Korea Air and Correspondence University and studied about their origins, programmes, course design, course production, student support services, assessment and trends of media-utilization. The most important medium in distanct education courses is the printed word. This applies to conventional correspondence study, as well as to highly sophisticated multi-media presentation like the courses of Open University. Other distance media used, such as radio, TV, audio-and video-tapes, are usually supplements which are introduced for special purposes of on special points to support motivation, to provide illustration, etc. This largely applies also to face-to-face sessions combined with distance study. And new developments in audio-visual media that are affecting in distance education systems are considered videodiscs, cable TV, teleconferencing, computer, and videotex. The main trends in the use of Media in distance education is followed; * There is a clear movement away from using broadcasting by distance learning systems. * The range of audio-visual media suitable for distance education is rapidly increasing. * The educational potential of audio-visual media still tends to be under-exploited by distance learning systems. Different media serve different educational functions. Thus using a media broadens the range and effectiveness of distance education. There is no super media. Each can serve different functions. So, we use a range of media in a planned and inter-grated manner so that a variety of educational functions and approaches can be offered.
