C. Bronte의 villette에 나타난 이중성 연구

Abstract

Charlotte Bronte‥와 그녀의 작품들을 논하는데 있어 이중성이라는 단어는 아주 중요하다. 빅토리아 가부장제 사회에서 사회의 요구와 그 요구에 반항하는 욕망의 이중성 사이에서 여성 작가들이 겪었던 갈등을 Charlotte Bronte‥가 대표적으로 보여주고 있기 때문이다. Villett에서 Charlotte Bronte‥는 주인공 Lucy Snowe의 삶뿐 아니라 그녀의 글쓰기를 통해서도 이 이중성을 보여준다. Lucy의 이중성을 두 가지로 나눌 수 있는데 하나는 그녀가 관찰하는 여성들에게 보이는 끌림과 반감의 태도이다. Lucy가 이렇게 끌림과 반감을 동시에 보이는 이유는 그녀에게 가부장제 사회가 부여하는 전통적인 여성상을 내재화 한 부분과 그 여성상을 거부하는 부분이 공존하기 때문이다. 다른 하나는 Lucy가 경제적 기반을 바탕으로 자신의 주체성과 독립성을 강하게 주장하면서도 다른 한편으로는 그 주체성을 위협할 수 있는 낭만적인 사랑 또한 추구한다는 것이다. Lucy의 글쓰기는 그녀가 보여주는 체제순응적인 면과 사회반항적인 면의 이중성과 연결된다. 첫째, Villette은 전체적으로는 사실주의 서술을 따르고 있지만 그 속에서 Gothic전통이나 환상적이고 마술적인 비사실적 요소들이 보이고 이런 비사실적 요소들은 사실주의 서술로는 직접적으로 나타낼 수 없는 Lucy의 비관습적인 측면을 나타내는 기능을 한다. 둘째, 자서전의 화자인 Lucy는 때로 고의적으로 독자들에게 자신이 아는 것을 숨김으로써 당대 문학규범과 일반 독자들의 기대를 깨뜨려서 신뢰할 수 없는 화자라고 인식된다. Lucy의 고의적인 침묵과 회피는 자신의 생각과 감정을 이해하지 못하는 독자들에게 자신이 아는 사실을 숨김으로써 그들에게 힘을 행사하는 의미가 있지만 또한 자신에게 불리하게 작용할 수 있는 부분들을 독자들에게 아예 밝히지 않음으로써 그들의 비난을 피하려는 방어책이기도 하다. Lucy의 삶과 글쓰기에서 보여진 이중성은 끝까지 해결되지 않는다. Charlotte Bronte‥는 이전 작품들에서는 이중성의 불완전한 화합을 시도했지만 Villette에서는 화해를 시도하지 않고 열린 결말로 놔둠으로써 이중성 중 어느 한 가지를 선택할 수 없는 이 시대 여성들의 현실에 대한 성숙한 인식을 보여 준다.;The word "duality" is essential to understand and study Charlotte Bronte^(") and her works, because she represents the conflict between the demands of Victorian patriarchal society on women and the desire of Victorian women writers to resist the demands. In Villette, the Iast novel published in her life time, Charlotte Bronte^(") describes this duality though Lucy Snowe's life and writing. The duality of Lucy as a character can be divided into two aspects. First, she feels both attraction and repulsion toward other women characters. The attraction and repulsion clearly demonstrate that she has internalized the image of a conventional woman patriarchal society has imbued and she rejets that repressive image at the same time. Second, Lucy not only claims hex autonomy and independence based on economic self-reliance but pursues romantic love which can threaten the autonomy. Lucy's writing techniques have close relationship with the duality in her character. First, Villette obeys realistic narrative in general but also has some unrealistic elements such as Gothic devices, fantastic and imaginative writings. These unrealistic elements within realistic narrative play a role to present Lucy's repressed inner self and her unconventional aspects to readers which can't be properly represented by realistic narrative. Second, Lucy, the narrator of her autobiographical novel, is regarded as an unreliable narrator because she breaks the convention of first-person autobiographical narration by her deliberate hiding of what she knows from readers occasionally. Lucy's designed silence and evasiveness have dual aspects. One is Lucy's desire to exercise her power on readers who don't understand her thoughts and feelings by withholding information about herself. The other is Lucy's defensive strategy to avoid conventional readers' charges by hiding what could be considered unconventional and unwomanish if revealed instantly and directly to them. Duality as seen in Lucy's life and writing is not resolved or reconciled to the end. Charlotte Bronte^(") tried imperfect reconciliation in her earlier works such as Jane Eyre and Shirley, but her decision not to give a closed ending in Villette shows her mature recognition about contemporary women's social condition which makes it extremely hard for women to reconcile the duality.
