Abstract
The first and the second grade students of elementary schools attended a formal education institute for the first time in their life. Here they are to learn both their mother-tongue language and a systematic school mathematics simultaneously. And some may have difficulty in understanding mathematics due to semantic ambiguity in representations: the young learners have difficulties in understanding mathematical terminologies and questions and in distinguishing various meanings of words and sentences of daily life. This thesis analyzed representations appeared in mathematics textbooks for early elementary-school learners. A preliminary survey was made with 18 elementary school children to see 'how they read numbers and what they think 'division' is. Two major questions are (A) whether terminologies of textbooks are defined clear enough and (B) whether sentences are fully explained to comprehend the questions. 1,122 sentences from the math textbooks for 1st and 2nd grade learners were selected and analyzed. In the analysis, we were deeply concerned if the terminologies and the narrative sentences are appropriate so that those may "understand" meaning of them. As the result, among the 1,122 sentences analyzed, 17 were found to be questioned on. As an example, given "Play a game, with two-digit number cards, of adding up the numbers.", most students do not understand the game: Is the question asking for adding the numbers of several cards or of the two digits on a card? The findings of this research are as follows: First, there are daily-used common words in place of the formal terms, and thereby cause confusion to the learners. Second, there are sentences that do not give enough and accurate explanation or narration of a situation and therefore impede the learners' understanding. Third, some of the problem-solving questions overlook the discrepancy and differences between a situation in the question and those in the learners' actual daily lives. Some narrations even use descriptions that depend on the context of the textbook and that are therefore apt to perplex the learners. And Fourth, the conflict rising from the difficulty of converged mathematics terminology for instructional and teaching purposes can surely be one of the major obstacles in writing textbooks. In conclusion, this research noted many inadequate expressions are used in elementary-school mathematics textbooks. Lastly, this paper would like to make a couple of suggestions for future works and for the improvement on this subject. Early elementary-school students' textbooks ought to give a full detail, a clearer description in the text because the learners are still in the early stage of acquiring their language; and a broader and vertically-connected study is needed in the field of how to distinguish mathematics terminology from ordinary daily-used words.
