An English Travel Guide to Gyeonggi-do

Abstract

본 논문은 영어 사용 가능자들을 위해 서울의 배경 지역인 경기도에 관한 영문 여행 안내서를 제공하고 실용적인 여행 안내서의 모델을 제시하고자 제작된 것이다. 한국 관광공사 통계에 의하면, 2005년 4백만 명 이상의 외국인 관광객들이 한국을 방문했지만, 대부분이 체류기간 동안 서울에만 머무른 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 기존에 출판된 대부분의 여행 안내서는 한국 또는 서울에 관한 것이어서 아쉽게도 경기도에 관한 실용적인 안내서는 부족한 실정이다. 그러므로, 본 논문은 경기도에 관한 영문 여행 안내서에 대한 필요를 동기로 하고 있다. 본 논문의 전반부는 Louise Purwin Zobel의 The Travel Writer’s Handbook: How To Write and Sell Your Own Travel Experiences, Cynthia Dial의 Travel Writing, Don George와 Charlotte Hindle의 Travel Writing을 참고로 하여 논문 작성법에 대해 기술한다. 위의 참고 자료들을 바탕으로, 성공적인 여행 관련 작문이 되기 위해 본 논문은 여행 안내서 계획, 작문 형식 연구, 사진 편집 등의 폭넓은 분석과 실용적인 접근을 제시한다. 또한, 후의 다른 여행 안내서를 위해 여행 안내서 주제와 사진 편집 기술에 대한 논의도 포함하고 있다.;This thesis is to provide an English travel guide to Gyeonggi-do, the motherland of Seoul, to foreign visitors and to offer a model of a practical travel guidebook written in English for the benefit of future travel writers. According to the statistics of Korea Tourism Organization, Korea received over four million foreign visitors in 2005. However, it turned out that most of them stayed in Seoul during their stay. As a result, most of travel guides on Korea have concentrated on Seoul or on Korea. In fact, none of a practical English travel guide to Gyeonggi-do is available in the market. Therefore, this project was motivated by the need of English travel guidebooks on Gyeonggi-do for foreign visitors. This thesis is prefaced with a theoretical paper that discussed principles of writing a travel guide by critically reviewing The Travel Writer’s Handbook: How To Write and Sell Your Own Travel Experiences by Louise Purwin Zobel, Travel Writing by Cynthia Dial, and Travel Writing by Don George and Charlotte Hindle. Based on these books, the theoretical paper provides comprehensive analyses of and functional approaches to successful travel writing, such as planning a travel guide, considering writing style, and editing photos. Also, the paper includes discussion on a subject of writing and techniques of photo editing for future travel writings.
