Abstract
This thesis purposes to examine the feminist dramaturgic strategies in the dramas of Susan Glaspell, one of many female dramatists whose achievements had been relatively disregarded in the history of American theatre. This study aims to demonstrate that Glaspell's feminist dramaturgy is effectively depicted in her use the strategy of obscurity. In consequence, the author is endeavoring to establish not only the modern American theatre but also the modern feminist theatre, especially when she attempts to represent her dramas with the Provincetown players, an artistic collaboration community. The obscurity in Glaspell's works is the product of conflict between the conventional idea on femininity in 19^(th) century and the notion of new woman in early twentieth. Independent woman with paid job and companionate marriage started to recognize their gender in terms of socio cultural one, not biological one, insisting equal opportunities between the men and women. This was the revolutionary progress for the Victorian angel of the house who had molded her identity in patriarch society. This new woman also went further in order to break all the male dominated patterns, recreating female centered system. In this era of transition in the view of women, Glaspell's regionalism that originally began with conservative pioneering Midwestern virtues also developed into avant- garde bohemian's cosmopolitan values. In the theatre, Glaspell was faced with various challenges aroused from the struggle between the conventional stage and the experimental in the American theatre which was stagnant with commercialism of early twentieth. Therefore, she co-founded the Provincetown Players in order to experiment more freely with American hybrid expressionism. The Provincetown Players became a significant part of fertile seedbed in establishing the modern American theatre. This thesis analyzes Glaspell's three dramas including Trifles, The Outside, and The Verge. Through the themes, characters, and structures of her works, the author embodies feminist narrative that would encourage more spectatorship. At the same time, she puts efforts in the collaborative process of community theatre experimenting expressionistic drama techniques for setting or language. She allows her narrative to flow effectively into outside theatre by using provocative female speech strategy such as fragmented speech, poetic language or anti-closure, and so forth. Her expressionistic symbols also collaborate with female speech strategy to take hold of the audience's imagination. Such the strategy of obscurity in her ideas or styles of drama consequently enables Glaspell to achieve creative female language activity of her own by allowing the fluidity of spectators' interpretation.
