Feminist-Queer Intersections in Post-"Feminism Reboot" South Korean Literature

Abstract

This thesis focuses on literary narratives which portray solidarity, friendship, and love between female characters in contemporary South Korean literature. One effect of the so-called “feminist reboot” is the increase in female characters in literature, and an emphasis especially on emotions exchanged between two or more women as friends, sisters or even lovers. This study will delve into the specifics of why and how narratives of female friendship and emotional vulnerability between women have become such prominent themes in Korean literature, and how such stories reveal the main concerns of South Korean gender and sexuality discourse today. Through an examination of feminist literary works in the past decade, this thesis argues that female-friendship/lesbian narratives work toward the following functions within contemporary South Korean feminist literature. Firstly, such narratives are used portray the emotional lives of women without basing them within a male heterosexual framework, as women’s literature has done in the past. Secondly, they illustrate emotional bonds that emphasize solidarity as women, which is one of the main proposed solutions within contemporary South Korean feminism. Thirdly, lesbian narratives are used to portray alternative and subversive femininities and imagine characters in which characters find liberation from what may be understood as “compulsory heterosexuality”, or the societal norms of gender defined largely by heterosexual male perspectives. Thus, lesbian relationships in literature work to both disrupt traditional expectations placed on women (such as to produce children or accommodate the male gaze) while also addressing a larger critical discourse of gender and sexuality norms in South Korean society. In such regard, the study contends that lesbian literature should be recognized not only as a subsection of contemporary queer literature, but as a continuation of post-“feminist reboot” feminist literature. The study mainly analyzes three South Korean fictional works: Kang Hwagil’s Another Person (2017), Choi Eunyeong’s “The Summer” (2018), and Kim Hyejin’s Concerning My Daughter (2017). In its analysis, the thesis explores the ways in which lesbian identity and/or implicitly lesbian-feminist themes are employed in these works to expand on the discourse of gender and sexuality within contemporary South Korean society.;본 논문은 현대 한국 페미니즘 문학에서 여성 등장인물 간의 연대, 우정, 사랑을 묘사하는 서사에 초점을 맞춘다. 이른바 ‘페미니즘 리부트’의 영향으로 현대 문학에서 여성 캐릭터는 더욱 많아졌고, 이러한 작품들은 둘 이상의 여성이 친구 또는 연인으로 정서적 교류에 중점을 둔다. 본 연구는 여성 간의 우정에 대한 서사가 한국 현대문학에서 주요한 주제가 된 계기와, 현대 문학 속 레즈비언 서사에 담겨 있는 오늘날 한국 젠더와 섹슈얼리티 담론을 살펴본다. 본 논문은 지난 10년간의 페미니즘 문학 작품에 대한 고찰을 통해 현대 한국 페미니즘 문학에서 여성 우정/레즈비언 서사가 갖는 주요 기능에 대해서 다음과 같은 주장을 제기한다. 첫째, 레즈비언 서사는 남성-이성애자의 관점에 근거하지 않은 여성의 정서적 삶을 묘사하고, 이를 통해 페미니즘의 관점을 강조할 수 있다는 점에서 유의미하다. 둘째, 레즈비언 관계는 현대 페미니즘의 주요 해결책으로 제시되는 여성 간의 연대를 강조하는 정서적 유대를 보여준다. 셋째, 레즈비언 서사의 등장인물은 전복적인 여성성을 보여줄 수 있으며, '강제적인 이성애’, 즉 이성애 남성의 관점에 의해 주로 정의되는 성별에 대한 사회적 규범으로부터 해방된 캐릭터로 자주 그려진다. 따라서 문학 속 레즈비언 관계는 여성에 대한 전통적인 기대를 무너뜨리는 동시에 한국 사회의 젠더와 섹슈얼리티 규범에 대한 더 비판적 담론을 다루고 있다. 본 논문은 페미니즘을 주제로 한 소설인 강화길의 『다른 사람』(2017), 최은영의 「그 여름」(2018)과 김혜진의 『딸에 대하여』(2017)를 주로 분석하면서 이 세 작품에서 레즈비언 정체성 또는 레즈비언-페미니스트 주제가 페미니즘과 젠더 담론을 확장하는 데 활용되고 있음을 주장한다.
