발달장애 학생의 청소년기 비장애 형제자매가 인식하는 역할과 지원 요구

Abstract

형제자매 관계는 개인의 생애주기에 있어 사실상 부모보다 오래도록 지속되는 주요한 가족 관계로, 개인의 발달과 성장에 미치는 그 지대한 영향에 비해 연구 분야에서는 부모-자녀 관계보다 다소 소외된 측면이 있다. 특히 형제자매 관계 중 한쪽이 삶의 다양한 측면에서 특별한 요구를 갖는 발달장애인인 경우에는 형제자매 관계에 대한 가족 지원 전문가들의 추가적인 관심이 필요하다. 장애 형제자매로 인해 비롯하는 독특한 심리적 영향과 그로 인해 발생하는 지원 요구는, 사춘기의 영향을 받아 정서적으로 예민해지고 더 많은 스트레스에 노출되는 청소년기에 두드러질 수 있다. 발달장애인을 구성원으로 포함하는 가족에 대한 지원을 논의하는 과정에서 청소년기 비장애 형제자매의 관점과 지원 요구에 대해 지금보다 더 많은 관심이 촉구된다. 개인은 사회로부터 자신이 차지하고 있는 위치에 적절한 행동으로 기대되는 바를 수행하면서 사회와 상호작용한다. 본 연구에서는 발달장애인을 형제자매로 둔 청소년들이 가족 내외에서 자신에게 주어진 역할을 어떻게 인식하는지와 그러한 역할을 수행하는 과정에서 경험하는 지원 요구가 무엇인지에 초점을 두었다. 이러한 연구 목적을 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 수도권에 거주하는 발달장애인의 청소년기 형제자매 10명을 목적 표집 및 눈덩이 표집을 통하여 모집하였다. 연구자는 각 연구 참여자에게 포토보이스(photovoice) 활동에 대한 오리엔테이션을 진행한 후, 포토보이스 활동 결과를 바탕으로 한 심층 면담과 집단 토의를 1회씩 진행하였다. 심층 면담에서 활용한 질문은 포토보이스 연구에서 주로 활용되는 Shaffer(1983)의 SHOWeD 질문기법과 Hussey(2006)의 PHOTO 질문기법을 연구 목적에 맞게 응용하여 사용하였다. 이를 통해 수집된 자료는 체계적인 질적 분석을 통해 코드화되었으며, 각 의미 단위 사이의 공통 패턴을 찾아 범주화하였다. 이와 같은 작업을 통해 최종적으로 ‘형제자매 역할에 영향을 주는 요인’, ‘형제자매 역할의 실제’, ‘형제자매 역할로 인한 정서적 경험’, ‘형제자매 역할 관련 지원 요구’라는 4가지 주제와 이에 대한 총 18가지의 소주제가 도출되었다. 첫 번째 주제인 형제자매의 역할에 영향을 주는 요인에서는 장애 형제자매에 대한 애정, 걱정스러움, 안쓰러움이나 미안한 감정, 부모님에 대한 감사와 걱정, 그리고 주변으로부터의 기대가 소주제로 나타났다. 두 번째 주제인 형제자매 역할의 실제는 장애 형제자매를 위한 놀이 친구의 역할, 일상적인 돌봄을 제공하는 돌봄 제공자의 역할, 필요한 기술을 가르치는 가정교사의 역할, 그리고 장애 형제자매를 위해 자신의 요구를 포기하는 일방적인 양보자의 역할이 파악되었다. 세 번째 주제인 형제자매의 역할로 인한 정서적 경험에서는, 연구 참여자들이 실제로 역할을 수행하는 맥락에서 이들이 경험하는 감정이 어떠한지 파악되었다. 이는 역할에 대한 보람, 대화 상대의 부재로 인한 외로움, 타인의 시선에 대한 수치심과 역할 수행 과정에서 겪는 스트레스에 대한 짜증이나 불만으로 나타났다. 네 번째 주제인 형제자매 역할 관련 지원 요구는 돌봄 지원에 대한 요구, 장애 형제자매의 교육에 대한 요구, 형제자매 본인의 요구에 대한 존중, 적절한 정보 제공, 주변의 인식 및 태도 변화로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 하여 청소년기 비장애 형제자매의 원만한 역할 수행을 지원하는 방안에 대해 논의하였다. 본 연구는 포토보이스라는 연구 방법을 통해 청소년기를 지나는 비장애 형제자매들의 진솔한 이야기를 ‘역할’이라는 사회학적 개념을 중심으로 풀어내었다는 의의가 있다. 향후로 청소년기 비장애 형제자매에 대한 더욱 활발하고 깊이 있는 연구 활동이 진행되기를 제언한다. ;Sibling relationships are a major family relationship that actually lasts longer than parents in an individual's life cycle, however, despite of the profound impact on individual development and growth, they are somewhat alienated compared to parent-child relationships in the field of research. In particular, if one side of the sibling relationships is a developmentally disabled person with special needs in various aspects of life, additional attention from family support experts on sibling relationships is needed. The unique psychological effects of disabled siblings and the support needs resulted by them can be prominent in adolescence, when they are affected by puberty, becoming emotionally sensitive and exposed to more stress. In the process of discussing support for families including people with developmental disabilities as members, more attention is urged than now on the perspective and support needs of non-disabled siblings in adolescence. Individuals interact with society while performing what is expected to be appropriate for their position in society. This study focused on how adolescents siblings of people with developmental disabilities perceive the role given to them within and outside their families and what support needs they experience in the process of performing such a role. In this study, 10 adolescent siblings of people with developmental disabilities living in the metropolitan area were recruited through purposive sampling and snowball sampling. The researcher conducted an orientation for each study participant on the photovoice activity, and then conducted an in-depth interview and group discussion based on the results of the photovoice activity. The questions used in the in-depth interview were used by applying Shaffer (1983)'s SHOWeD and Hussey (2006)'s PHOTO, which are mainly used in photo voice research, to suit the purpose of the study. The data collected through this were coded through systematic qualitative analysis, and common patterns between each semantic unit were found and categorized. Through this work, four topics and 18 sub-topics were finally drawn: “Factors influencing sibling roles”, “The Practices of sibling roles”,“Emotional experiences from sibling roles”, and “Support needs related to sibling roles”. In the first topic, the factors affecting the role of siblings, affection for disabled siblings, anxiety, feelings of pity or sorry, gratitude and concern for parents, and expectations from those around them were sub-topics. The second topic, the roles of siblings, were identified as the role of playmates for disabled siblings, the role of caregivers providing daily care, the role of family teachers teaching necessary skills, and the role of one-sided sacrifice giving up their needs for disabled siblings. In the third topic, the emotional experiences due to the role of siblings were identified in the context of actually playing a role. These were found as being worthwhile to perform the role, loneliness due to the absence of a conversation partner, shame on the gaze of others, and frustration or dissatisfaction about stress experienced in the process of performing the role. The fourth topic, the support needs related to the sibling role, was found to be a demand for care support, a demand for education of disabled siblings, respect for the sibling's own needs, provision of appropriate information, and changes in perceptions and attitudes around them. Based on these results, this study discussed ways to support the smooth role performance of non-disabled siblings in adolescence. This study is meaningful in that it unraveled the true stories of non-disabled siblings passing through adolescence, focusing on the sociological concept of “role” through a research method called Photovoice. It is suggested that more active and in-depth research activities on non-disabled siblings in adolescence will be conducted in the future.
