A Study on the View of Womanhood in the film Kim Ji-young

Abstract

The main aim of this thesis is to understand how traditional Confucianism women's values and roles persist in the present day by analysing the woman's expression in the South Korean film, Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019). Through the analysis of the events that happened to Kim Ji-young and the surrounding characters in the film, I try to show the discrimination and gender inequality patterns of women are prevalent in South Korean society nowadays. Confucianism had a deep impact on East Asia Oriental culture, especially the South Korean culture, which was implicated in the social and cultural backgrounds. The traditional image of women in South Korea is affected by the far-reaching impact of Confucianism and always has a male-dominated image as it controls people's minds and behaviours that are strongly implanted since birth. We have always been told what roles we should be in a society based on our gender by parents, friends, media and even the world itself. Through this study, it is expected that the social phenomena and women’s issues in South Korea can be seen through the view of womanhood shown in the film, Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019) which received a lot of attention and criticism-both positive and negative to society and also internationally. The film portrayed the blatant unfair treatment juxtaposed with the opposite sexes' preferential treatment that made it difficult for Kim Ji-young to endure. In the same vein, she is conscious of her lesser role in the family hierarchy. As she embarks on her career path, she experiences discrimination by male motives and recognises the stark limitations of women. Moreover, only women are the helpers of women. Even when Kim Ji-young, experienced discrimination as a kid, her mother stood by her side and encouraged her, and the woman who rescued Kim Ji-young even when she encountered challenges in her academic or professional life was a woman. This suggests that only women can solve societal issues like women's oppression and discrimination. It demonstrates that women's awareness and solidarity can help to overcome the situation rather than the assistance of men. Male, patriarchy, male-centred social perception, and societal discrimination due to pregnancy, childcare, and abortion are some of the main antagonists in this story. Resistance and conventional feminism focused on this issue. But it is disheartening that there is not a fresh viewpoint that goes beyond conventional viewpoints. As time went on, women's image in East Asia started changing with the influence of Western culture. In South Korean history, there were countless women who tried to reform the society and there are multitudes who are still working on it until now, but they are constantly frustrated and reflected in their works. In the film, it reflects the modern view of womanhood in South Korea, also the changing modern view of womanhood that many people in the society have been addressing gender inequality and reinforcing the awareness of gender equality. However, South Korean culture is still having a deep impact on Confucianism, which controls the values and ways of things of people in the patriarchal society. Thus, the traditional Confucian values that remained in the South Korean society restrained the women from reforming their positions in society and family.;본 논문의 주된 목적은 한국 영화 <82년생 김지영>(2019)에 나타난 여성에 대한 표현과 모습을 분석하여 오늘날까지 여성에 대한 전통적인 유교적 가치관과 역할이 어떻게 지속되고 있는지를 이해하기 위함이다. 영화 속 주인공 김지영과 주변 인물들에게 일어난 사건들을 분석하여, 오늘날 한국 사회에 여성들의 성 불평등 패턴들과 차별이 만연함을 보여주고자 한다. 유교는 동아시아 동양 문화, 특히 한국 문화에 깊은 영향을 미쳐왔으며, 이 중 사회적, 문화적 배경과 큰 연관이 있다. 한국의 전통적인 여성상은 유교의 지대한 영향을 받았으며, 항상 남성지배적, 남성 중심적인 이미지를 가져왔기에 이 사상은 태어날 때부터 강하게 심겨져 사람의 마음과 행동을 통제했다. 또한 한국 여성은 부모, 친구, 미디어, 심지어 세계 자체로부터 성별에 기반하여 사회 내에서 한국 여성이 어떤 역할을 해야 하는지에 대해 항상 들어왔다. 본 연구를 통해 많은 주목과 비판을 동시에 받았던 영화인 <82년생 김지영>에서 나타난 여성관을 통해, 한국의 사회현상과 여성에 관한 쟁점을 살펴볼 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 영화는 김지영이 견디기 어렵게 만들었던 노골적으로 부당한 대우와 반면 반대 성인 남성의 특혜를 병치되게 구성하여 묘사하고 있다. 같은 맥락에서 그녀는 가족 위계질서 내에서 자신의 역할이 적다는 것을 인식하고 있다. 그녀는 직장 생활을 하면 할수록, 남성 동기와의 차별을 경험하고 여성로서의 극명한 한계를 인식한게 된다. 더욱이 여성의 조력자는 여성뿐이라는 것이다. 주인공인 김지영이 어렸을 때 차별을 당했을 때조차 그녀의 어머니가 옆을 지키며 격려해 주었고, 학업이나 직장생활에서 어려움을 겪을 때에도 그녀를 지켰던 사람도 바로 여자였다. 이는 여성의 억압이나 차별과 같은 사회적 문제들은 여성들만이 해결할 수 있음을 시사한다. 남성의 도움보다는 여성의 자각과 연대가 상황 해결에 더 도움이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이 이야기에서 주된 반대론자는 남성, 가부장제, 남성 중심의 사회적 인식, 임신, 육아, 낙태 등으로 인한 사회적 차별들이라고 볼 수 있다. 저항과 기존 페미니즘은 이 문제에 주목하고 있다. 하지만 기존의 관점을 뛰어넘는 새로운 관점이 없다는 점은 아쉽다. 시간이 지나면서, 동아시아에서 여성의 이미지는 서구문화의 영향으로 변화하기 시작했다. 한국 역사에서도 사회를 개혁하려고 노력한 수많은 여성들이 있었고, 지금까지도 이를 위해 노력하고 있는 수많은 여성들이 있지만 그들은 끊임없이 좌절했고, 그들이 하고 있는 일에 대해 깊이 생각하기도 했다. 영화에는 한국의 현대적 여성관이 반영되어 있으며, 사회의 많은 사람들이 성 불평등 문제를 다루고 성평등 의식을 강화해오면서 변화하는 현대적 여성관도 반영되어 있다. 그러나 한국 문화는 여전히 가부장제 사회에서 사람들의 가치관과 사고하는 방식을 통제하는 유교사상에 여전히 깊게 영향을 받고 있다. 따라서 한국 사회에 남아 있는 전통적인 유교적 가치관은 여성이 사회와 가정에서 자신의 위치를 개혁하는 데 방해가 되고있다.
