Performing Feminine Masculinity in Cross-Dressing K-Drama

Abstract

This thesis explores the way that masculinity is reproduced by female characters in Korean TV dramas, specifically focusing on the cross-dressing subgenre. The 2008 drama Coffee Prince is likely the most popular example work of this subgenre; however, this thesis focuses on recent works Love in the Moonlight, The King’s Affection, and Our Blooming Youth. All of these dramas feature a female lead who must, for several reasons, dress as a man. Part of the cross-dressing subgenre formula, the male lead of these dramas develops feelings for the female lead despite thinking she is a man. The goal of this thesis is to examine how the female leads perform masculinity as a flawed expression of masculine gender, how sexuality and love come to play into this performance, and how the dramas reinforce heteronormativity and biological gender to the audience. ;본 논문은 한국 TV 드라마에서 남성성이 여성 캐릭터에 의해 재현되는 방식, 특히 크로스드레싱 하위장르를 중심으로 탐구한다. 2008년 드라마 ‘커피 프린스 1호점’은 이 장르의 대표작이며, 이 논문은 최근작인 '구르미 그린 달빛', '연모', '청춘월담'에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이 모든 드라마들은 다양한 이유로 남장하는 여자 주인공이 등장한다. 크로스드레싱 하위 장르의 일부로, 이 드라마들의 남자 주인공은 여자 주인공이 남자라고 생각하면서도 여자 주인공에게 반해버린다. 이 논문의 목적은 여성 주인공들이 남성성의 결함 있는 표현으로서 남성성을 어떻게 수행하는지, 이 드라마에 성과 사랑이 어떻게 작용하게 되는지, 또는 드라마가 관객들에게 이성애와 젠더를 어떻게 강화하는지를 살펴볼 것이다.
