Perceptions Toward Music Therapy of Parents of Children With Disabilitiesin the United Arab Emirates

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the parents' perception of music therapy given to their children with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 33 parents of children with disabilities from Sharjah. Children of all participants had music therapy experiences in Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services(SCHS). The survey contained 43 questions about demographics of parents and children, the settings of music therapy sessions, parents' experience of music therapy, and parents' perceptions on music therapy. Among the participants, some parents 33.3%(n=11) have directly participated in their children’s session and 45.5% of parents (n=15) have observed the child's sessions. Parents satisfaction of child's music therapy service (M =4.5) was between 5 (Strongly agree) and 4 (Agree). Parents who had directly participated in child's session were significantly more satisfied with child's music therapy services (p<.05), and perceived change in a child after music therapy sessions (p<.05). Most parents, 93.9% (n=31), responded that they sought assistance with their expectations on music therapy, such as new assignments that children can apply at home or school 44.4% (n=16). It appeared that even parents who responded to have never tried to learn about music therapy (n=15) still wanted to increase their understanding. However, participants 33.3% (n=5) responded to not know how to get better informed. Based on the results, even with the specific circumstances where music education was mostly absent for most children, they could respond to music and may facilitate positive changes. Also, there was a clear demand to expand informatory seminars for parents who have children with disabilities and these findings may provide a basis for establishing music therapy programs in Arabic countries.;본 연구의 목적은 UAE 장애아동 부모의 음악치료에 대한 인식을 알아보는 것이다. 연구 참여자는 현재 아랍에미레이트 국가 중 샤르자에서 음악치료 경험이 있는 장애아를 둔 부모 33명이다. 참여자 모집은 sharjah에 위치한 장애아동치료기관 담당자에게 본 연구에 대해 설명한 후 동의하에 참여자를 모집하였다. 연구 참여에 동의한 35명을 대상으로 온라인 조사를 시행하여 장애아동 음악치료의 현황, 프로그램 실태, 부모의 참여 경험, 만족도와 기대하는 바에 대한 내용을 수집하였다. 분석결과 부모 만족도(M=4.5)는 5(매우동의)에서 4(동의) 사이였다. 부모의 장애아동 음악치료에 대한 만족도와 부모의 음악치료 참여여부를 비교하였을 때 아동의 음악치료세션에 참여한 경험이 있는 부모가 음악치료에 더욱 만족하는 것으로 나타났다(P <.05). 또한 음악치료에 대해 더 자세히 알아보려고 한 경험이 없다고 응답한 부모(15명)들은 방법을 몰라서 배우지 못했다고 응답했으며(33.3%, 5명) 많은 부모들이 음악 치료를 배우는 더 나은 방법과 음악 치료에 대한 수요를 요구하며 음악치료의 정보에 대한 부족을 지적하였다. 본 연구 결과, UAE 특성상 음악교육이 거의 이루어지지 않는 환경임에도 불구하고 장애아동이 치료세팅 내에서 음악을 활용한다는 것에 대한 긍정적인 반응이 나타난다는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 장애아동 음악치료에서의 만족도와 기대하는 바를 파악함으로써 수혜아동 부모의 의견을 수렴하고 반영하여 보다 나은 음악치료 프로그램을 시행하는데 필요한 기초자료를 제시하였다는데 의의가 있다.
