Abstract
;As our society enters a multi-cultural society, the number of married immigrant women and multi-cultural family children is increasing every year. In this situation, diverse policies and budgets of government, enterprises, and civic groups are also increasing to support marriage migrant women and their children. Nonetheless, there are still group of people, who have been left out of the support. The midway immigrated adolescents are the children and adolescents of the international marriage family who entered the country due to parental immigration or remarriage after birth in a foreign country (Kim, Myeongjung, 2011). Among the midway immigrated adolescents participating in this study, they are 14 to 17 years old and currently consisted of adolescents enrolled in multi-cultural foster care alternative schools. They usually reside in Korea due to their parents' remarriage, and their residence period is less than one year, while presenting various psychological and social adjustment problems due to their living in unfamiliar culture. Therefore, support for helping them adapt to psychological and social issues in Korean society is considered to be very important. Therefore, the study defined ‘psychological and social adaptability' as ‘ego resilience' and aimed to improve ego resilience of midway immigrated adolescents participating in this study through art class. To do this, the study analyzed five components of ego resilience: intimacy, emotional control, positive thinking, problem solving, and autonomic behavior. Then, the study selected art media which are expected to be effective through comparison and analysis of previous research. According to the analysis, activities such as shaving cream, pastels, salt, plaster bandages, and markers were selected as main media for art activities. In this study, both quantitative data and qualitative data were analyzed simultaneously by the method of integrated study according to the simultaneous triangulation strategy of Creswell & Plano (2007). The results of this study are summarized as follows First, applying this art class to midway immigrated adolescent, the study compared ego resilience before and after experimental treatment. As a result, four sub domains of intimacy, emotional control, positive thinking and autonomous behavior, except problem solving factors showed improvement. Problem solving showed an increase while it was not statistically significant. Thus, positive correlation between the art class and ego resilience was confirmed. Second, the study conducted the evaluation of the actual performance of the 10 individuals admitted to the adolescents and the evaluation of the teacher observation. As a result, the study could demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of the art media and observe changes and developments of individual students in detail. Third, the researcher made a reflection log for each class to identify the problems and practical effects that can occur when applying the class. In addition, the implications of this art class were derived through the analysis of class satisfaction, self evaluation, and discussion contents. In this regard, the study confirms that art class has a positive effect on ego resilience of midway immigrated adolescents. Nonetheless, the study has limitation in that it conducted research with a small number of students in a particular alternative school, indicating that it is somewhat difficult to generalize the results. Therefore, it would be more likely to demonstrate greater effectiveness if more research samples are given to specimens through revision and supplementation in the future. However, this study has significance in that it is aimed at midway immigrated adolescents who have not been the subject of previous study. I hope that this study will further promote research for adolescents entering the country in the future and hope that this would serve as a foundation for midway immigrated adolescents to adapt psychologically and socially in the Korean society.
