Abstract
The purpose of this research is to identify how high school students who study liberal arts understand the differential coefficient in the social science context. According to national revised curriculum 2009, when students learn the differential coefficient, focuses on the symbolic definition and geometric meaning which is slope of the tangent line. Also, there is unit only for velocity acceleration when students learn the application of derivative. Therefore, students could not help learning the differential coefficient through the kinematic point of view. However, students who study liberal arts will enter college of social science and they will need non-kinematic point of view of differential coefficient in the social science context rather than kinematic point of view. Thus, the goal of this research is to help liberal arts students in high school understand and apply the differential coefficient in the social science context. The lesson focusing on the connection with social science was given to students. The understanding of students may be recognized by conversion between various representations of differential coefficient. So, the first research problem is how students’ understanding of differential coefficient has improved when the lesson focusing on the social science context was given to students. The second research problem is how students’ conversion between diverse representation has worked when the lesson focusing on the social science context has given to students. To solve the problems above, the lesson focusing on the social science has been organized. The 8 part of lessons are planned for 10 students who are 11th grade and study liberal arts. They have studied calculus already at regular class and their grade vary from 1 to 6 (the grade of South Korea is 1-9). There are before and after questionnaire to investigate student understanding which involves 4 questions and each of the question has same form and same purpose of estimation. The question 1. asks if students understand the differential coefficient in the geometrical figure. The question 2. asks if students understand the differential coefficient in the real life context. The question 3. asks if students interpret the graph of social studies and write it into sentences. The question 4. asks if students solve the sentence problem with given function; in other words the conversion between linguistic and symbolic of representation of non-kinematic differential coefficient. In this research, students understood the meaning of differential coefficient based on the functional relation between two variables. After all, they became free from the geometrical or the arithmetical point of view of differential coefficient. On the other hand, students could not flexibly convert the representation in the social science context. The conversion between symbolic and realistic representation was well accomplished. However, the conversion of graphic to linguistic representation was hard for students and conversely the conversion of linguistic to graphic representation was not that hard for students. In summary, the students’ understanding of non-kinematic differential coefficient in the social science context was inadequate. After the lesson related with social science has given to students, their concept of differential coefficient has improved and they can figure out the social phenomenon by change rate point of view. However, this research could not identify what teaching and learning skill would improve students’ understanding and conversion of representations. Also, there was a clear limitation that mathematics teachers who studied natural science teach social science to students. As a result, the professional training for mathematics teachers to teach is needed.;본 연구에서는 고등학교 인문계열 학생들이 사회과학의 맥락에서 미분계수의 이해를 보고자 한다. 2009 개정 교육과정의 <미적분Ⅰ>은 ‘Ⅲ.
