Abstract
Our national curriculum emphasizes problem solving since 1980s. 2015 National Curriculum that applies from 1st grade in middle and high school since 2018 presents problem solving as one of the mathematical competency students have to develop(Park et al., 2015). 2009 National Curriculum suggested problem posing only for elementary school students to develop problem solving capability as education point(Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, 2011). Accordingly, 2015 National Curriculum proposes problem posing for not only elementary students but also whole students by presenting it as sub-element of problem solving which is mathematical competency (Park et al., 2015). As the importance of problem posing increased, this study planned to proceed problem posing among high school students who has not studied much. The result of this study is thought to be helpful for high school teachers to progress classes using problem posing. The research classified the type of problem posing according to what is provided to students for creating problems. Each type of problem posing that provides topic, context, item to student is labeled as type A, type B, type C. Accordingly, study was conducted by establishing the following research questions. 1. What are the characteristics(completeness, content, level) shown in problem posing type A about Permutations and Combinations from 2nd grade in high school? 2. What are the characteristics(completeness, content, level, changing pattern) shown in problem posing type B about Permutations and Combinations from 2nd grade in high school? 3. What are the characteristics(completeness, content, level, changing pattern) shown in problem posing type C about Permutations and Combinations from 2nd grade in high school? To get answers to these research questions, problem posing about the unit 「Permutations and Combinations」 in the subject was conducted twice with total 95 science track students from 2nd grade of A girls’ high school in Seoul. The test paper was made of primary and secondary, and each test paper proposes total 3 problems including one problem posing problem for each type A, type B, and type C. Problem posing Type A analyzed completeness, content, and level of problem made by students, type B and type C analyzed completeness, content, level, and changing pattern of problem made by students, then the following results can be drawn. Problem posing type A shows how much students understand the content by providing problem posing activities related to number of cases and natural number split problem. While for problem about number of cases, 88% of students made problem completely, for natural number split problem, only 59% of students made complete problem and students who didn't present accurate conception and condition were 37%. Also, for number of cases problem, only 59% of students posed problem accordingly, and 16% made problem about multiplication theorem. For problem about natural number split, 82% of students made problem accordingly, but 11% made problem using combination with repetition. The problem posing type B shows whether students establish the details of condition of the problem well based on given circumstances. The result from 2 problems of problem posing type B presents 75% of complete problems and 17% of problems that have not enough conditions. The problem posing type C can encourage students to make high level of problems. Some applied problems about the binominal theorem was presented to the student and 90% of students posed applied problems. The conclusion based on the analysis result of students' problem posing is as follows. First, most students made complete problems by applying basic conception. However, since for problems about natural number split, the rate of complete problem is lower than other problems, it is necessary for teachers to guide sub-elements like condition about conception of split in detail. Second, students don't know much of the content of 「Permutations and Combinations」. The guide that makes students understand the term of additive law and multiplicative law better is needed by watching that many students made problems related to addition theorem or multiplication theorem of probability while making problems about number of cases. Also, as there were many students who made problems of combination with repetition for natural number split, teachers need to instruct the difference between the conception of them clearly. Third, problem posing type A was good for figuring out students' understanding of the content, type B was good for knowing whether students set the detailed condition when they made problem with the content and type C was appropriate for letting students experience making high level of problem by proposing applied problem. So, if a teacher uses problem posing type that fits for the purpose when proceeding problem posing, it is possible to get the desired result. This study is meaningful because high school students actively participated in problem posing and the problem posing type A which gives the minimum conditions also showed high completion results. And inquiring if students are understanding what they learned from 「Permutations and Combinations」 well based on that. Also, the research has meaning in the sense that research has corresponding activities for each of the students with various mathematical abilities and especially the subject is high school student. However, it has limits to the fact that it is hard to know whether the result will be the same with other subjects because the subjects of the research are limited to female science track students and 「Permutations and Combinations」. And it is hard to figure out characteristics and meaning of each problem made by students through consistent analysis giving code to students' answers. The results of this study indicate that many students create problems that are out-of-condition or are unable to distinguish concepts. Teachers who teach「Permutations and Combinations」have to guide their students with careful guidance on the conditions under which the concept will form. In addition, if the teacher is promoting problem posing, he should encourage students to create problems that match their level. This study conducted a study on problem posing about 「Permutations and Combinations」which contains many real-life issues, and further research into problem posing in other areas where real-life issues do not appear will yield different results. Also, presenting the right time and the number of problems to the students would give better results.
