Abstract
In modern society, anywhere outside of the school can become a place for learning. To live in this society, students should develop their ability to judge critically and select the right information, rather than unconditionally accepting a limitless number of information and knowledge. Therefore, critical thinking is emphasized as an essential core competency to be provided in the fourth industrial revolution era. However, the field of mathematics education study lacks research on teaching and learning methods to improve the ability of critical thinking. Problem-posing education plays an important role in cultivating critical thinking. It is one of the teaching and learning methods of the mathematics subject, which is that students do not take a receptive attitude but actively do mathematics. Problem-posing is defined in various ways by scholars. In this study, the problem-posing is defined as the activity of creating a new problem by modifying a condition of the given problem. The purpose of this study is to develop the immersion teaching model by using problem-posing teaching methods, linking the probability unit with the critical thinking, in the mathematics course and to observe how the critical thinking is shown from the students. The research questions of this study are as follows: Research Question 1. What are the sub-elements of critical thinking that can be found when the immersion teaching model is applied to a class in tandem with problem-posing teaching method? Research Question 2. What are the characteristics of the sub-elements of critical thinking in problem-posing teaching model that can be found depending on each student’s different achievement level? In order to answer to the research questions, I developed the immersion teaching model for the development of critical thinking in connection with the probability unit. The lessons were conducted to students for 4 times, each of which takes 90 minutes, and the learning materials were constructed based on the four steps of instructional model designed by Hwang Hee-sook (2001). The participants of the study were 11 students in the second grade of middle school. The researcher's field notes and the learning materials of the students were analyzed based on 12 sub-factors of critical thinking suggested by Huh Kyung-chul et al. (1990). The analysis led to make two major conclusions for the study. The first conclusion is that 11 elements except 'intellectual honesty' out of 12 sub-elements of critical thinking were observed through the integrated teaching model used in tandem with problem-posing teaching method. In particular, all of the sub-elements of critical thinking that were instructed in each lesson were found from the students reaction to the lesson. Moreover, the students were even able to find the sub-elements that were not instructed during the lesson, which tells that the immersion teaching model gave the students meaningful learning experiences. The second conclusion is that the sub-elements of critical thinking in problem-posing teaching model showed the following characteristics from the students in different achievement level. First, the most frequently observed element in the upper-level students was ‘Identifying hidden meanings and assumptions in certain statements’, followed by ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem’ and ‘Viewing a problem from various perspectives.’ The reason why many of the upper-level students showed ‘Identifying hidden meanings and assumptions in certain statements’ is that they showed their most interest in the types of problems that would be presented at the regular examination. The other reason is that they wondered the most about why the instructor was making them engage in a problem-posing activity in the learning situations compared to the students in other levels. ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem’ appeared during the trial-and-error process in creating problems more difficult than the original problems and in finding solutions for the problems. The upper-level students showed the behavior of viewing problems in various perspectives even before they started to engage in a problem-posing activity. They also examined whether the same principle could be applied to the problems of which given conditions were changed or whether there were differences in finding solutions for the modified problems. In this process, ‘Viewing a problem from various perspectives’ was found a lot. Next, the most commonly observed elements from the middle-level students are ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem’ and ‘Identifying hidden meanings and assumptions in certain statements.’ The reason why ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem’ was observed the most from the middle-level students is that they frequently had to improve their solutions for the problems because they could not solve the modified problems during a problem-posing activity. In addition, ‘Identifying hidden meanings and assumptions in certain statements’ was observed when the middle-level students were pondering what the hidden principles in the problems might be. ‘Asserting/evaluating opinions by using reasonable and sufficient evidence’ was found the most compared to the students in other levels. This is because the middle-level students went through many trial-and-error processes when they engaged in correcting the conditions of the problems, one of the problem-posing activities. In this activity, they had to select and adjust the conditions of the problems in order to make sure there were no errors between the conditions. ‘Objectivity’ was observed only from the middle-level students. It shows that they were able to evaluate their level of understanding objectively and to proceed the learning with depth through participating in the problem-posing activities. Finally, the elements that were mainly observed in the lower-level students are ‘viewing a problem from various perspectives’ and ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem.’ ‘Viewing a problem from various perspectives’ is often observed when lower-level students were passively modifying the given problems in problem-posing activities. ‘Using the criteria of evaluation appropriate to the nature of the problem’ was shown the most when the students were going through trial-and-error processes in solving the modified problems in problem-posing activities. Here are suggestions regarding to the development and application of the instructional model of the mathematics department to guide students’ critical thinking that is needed in living 21st century society. First, the immersion teaching model for critical thinking should be developed in conjunction with other units of mathematics. It is necessary to create the immersion teaching model, centering on the field of mathematics, in conjunction with different units in the field other than probability unit. It is also necessary to investigate the differences in aspects of how critical thinking is shown depending on different units. Second, the immersion teaching model for critical thinking should be established in conjunction with the field of mathematics at various school levels. After the establishment of the model in various levels of students, more study is needed on how critical thinking is shown according to the different developmental stages.
