바리공주 무가에 나타나는 다종교적 맥락의 분석

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 무가에 나타나는 다종교적 양상을 분석하여 한국인의 종교적 사고체계를 살펴보는 것에 있다. 무가는 무교의 텍스트인 동시에 다양한 종교적 맥락을 확인할 수 있는 다종교적 텍스트로서, 본고에서는 무가라는 단일한 텍스트 안에 다양한 종교적 맥락이 어떻게 통합되어 있는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 연구 대상으로 한 무가는 바리공주 무가로, 이는 한국의 대표적인 무가 중 하나이자 굉장히 많은 연구가 이루어진 무가이다. 그간의 연구 성과를 검토하면, 바리공주 무가에 대한 연구는 문학적 차원에서의 연구가 주류를 이루고 있고 종교학적으로 접근한 연구는 오히려 많지 않은 상황이다. 바리공주 무가에 나타나는 다양한 종교적 맥락을 분석하는 연구는 본격적으로 이루어지지 않은 것으로 보인다. 따라서 본 연구는 기존의 바리공주 무가 연구에 있어서의 부족한 논의를 보충하고자 하는 측면이 있다. 본고에서는 본격적 논의에 앞서 바리공주 무가가 구송되는 오구굿의 연행과 굿거리의 내용을 개략적으로 파악하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 무교의 외래종교 수용에 일정한 층위가 내포되어 있음을 유추하였다. 바리공주 무가 사설의 분석은 외래종교의 수용이 심층에 자리한 무교의 이해에 기초하여 이루어지고 있다는 판단을 토대로 하여 진행하였다. 바리공주 무가에 나타나는 종교적 관념은 크게 윤리관과 사후관의 두 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있었는데, 윤리관에 있어서는 유교의 영향이 뚜렷한 것으로, 사후관에 있어서는 불교와 민간신앙의 영향이 두드러지는 것으로 추측할 수 있었다. 바리공주 무가에는 가부장제와 효를 비롯한 유교적 윤리관이 뚜렷하게 나타나는데, 무교의 입장에서 바리공주 무가를 재해석한 결과 유교적 가치관이 서사의 심층에서 비판받는 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 불교의 영향은 불교 형상들과 개념, 그리고 저승관에서 두드러지는 것으로 보았고, 바리공주 무가에 나타나는 불교의 요소들은 도구적 성격이 강한 것으로 판단할 수 있었다. 저승관은 불교적 저승관과 민간신앙적 저승관으로 나누어 살펴보았는데, 불교에서 차용한 지옥과 극락 개념이 무교 고유의 저승 이해를 바탕으로 하는 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 민간신앙의 영향은 사후관을 저승관과 영육관으로 나누었을 때, 영육관에 있어서 뚜렷하게 나타나는 것으로 보았다. 바리공주 무가에 나타나는 영혼에 대한 희박한 관념과 육신을 중시하는 태도가 민간신앙에 동일하게 나타나는 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 바리공주 무가의 표면에는 유교적 가치관, 그리고 불교의 요소 및 개념들이 부각되어 있지만 이러한 외래종교의 맥락은 심층에 자리 잡은 무교의 이해에 기초하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 즉, 바리공주 무가에 나타나는 외래종교의 요소들은 외래종교 수용의 주체인 무교의 입장을 반영하는 것이다. 본고의 논의는 무가에 나타나는 다양한 종교적 맥락이 통합되는 양상을 개괄한 것으로, 추후의 더 심도 있는 연구를 요구하는 것이라고 본다.;This study aims at analyzing the multi-religious notions found in Korean shaman songs, and thus, exploring the religious way of thinking of Koreans. A Shaman song is not only a text taken from the shamanic religion, it also contains references to concepts from other religions. In this research, we will therefore study how the notions from different religions have been integrated to shaman songs, to form a unified text. This study will focus on the shaman song “Princess Bari”, as it is representative of Korean shaman songs. Although it has already been widely researched in other studies about shaman songs, “Princess Bari” has not been analyzed based on the value of its religious content. Rather, most studies focused on the literary aspect of the song, and none has researched its different religious aspects, which makes the present work relevant. In this study, we will strive to present a new take in the analysis of the shaman song “Princess Bari”, which will hopefully be a first step in addressing the lack of discussion on the subject of multi-religious references in the song among the existing studies. Shamanism has integrated the principles of other religions to a certain extent. Therefore, we analyzed the narrative content of “Princess Bari”, based on the principle that shamanism accepts foreign religions. The result of this study demonstrates that the religious notions appearing in “Princess Bari” can be classified in two categories, namely ethics and the belief in the afterlife. While the influence of the Confucian principles is clear in the formation of ethics, the belief in the afterlife was found to originate from Buddhism and Folk beliefs. Confucian principles are clearly portrayed in the “Princess Bari”, especially through its patriarchal system and concept of filial duty. However, when reinterpreted from a shamanist point of view, we can observe that the text criticizes those Confucian values. Meanwhile, we were able to confirm the influence of Buddhism, its imagery and concepts, as well as the idea of the world beyond. The Buddhist elements observed in “Princess Bari” were found to be instrumental to the narration. The concept of the afterworld was examined according to the conception Buddhism has of it, as well as how it is reflected in Folk beliefs. We concluded that the afterworld as understood by Shamanism finds its basis in the Buddhist concept of Heaven and Hell. We also examined the references to the belief in the afterlife, the afterworld and the idea of body and soul appearing in the Folk beliefs, and observed that their influence on the shaman song lies clearly in the references to the idea of body and soul. Indeed, “Princess Bari” focuses on the body, and barely mentions the soul, which reflects the ideas found in the Folk beliefs. On the surface, “Princess Bari” appears to emphasize Confucian values as well as notions and ideas found in Buddhism. However, the understanding of the shamanist religion is essential for the principles of those other religions to establish themselves. Thus, the references to other religions that appear in “Princess Bari” reflect the position of shamanism as the principal actor in the acceptance of foreign religions.
