Abstract
As people are showing more concern over the life quality of disabled students, the importance of their self-determination is being more emphasized not only as the best practice for them to enter adulthood but also as a useful teaching strategy to approach the general curriculum. To improve their self-determination, various teaching models and programs have been developed so far. Among them, Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) is a teaching-learning model devised to encourage disabled students’ self-directed learning with a series of processes that they set up their own goals, make plans to attain the goals and implement them, and then evaluate it on their own, and advanced research has been proving its effects. Both domestic and overseas researches applying SDLMI to disabled students have reported that SDLMI is effective in developing disabled students’ class participation behavior, academic skills, academic achievement, or transfer skills. However, most of these researches target middle or high school students with mild intellectual disability, and comparatively, there has been very little research targeting students with severe intellectual disability who get to have quite limited learning opportunities based on self-determination. This reflects our low expectation on students with severe intellectual disability. For students with severe intellectual disability who get to have limited opportunities for self-directed learning at class, when applying SDLMI, we will have to revise the model based on the characteristics of students with severe intellectual disability considering the fact that they face difficulties in understanding and applying SDLMI’s open-ended questions and vocabulary for students. Therefore, this study has provided an SDLMI intervention reconstructing visual materials like pictures for students with severe intellectual disability based on the tablet PC to elementary students with severe intellectual disability attending special class operating by the hour in order to examine how it influences their class participation behavior rate and problematic behavior rate. The subjects of this study are three children with severe intellectual disability affiliated to special class operating by the hour in a public elementary school located in G City, Gyeonggi-do. The place of experiment is the special class room those participating children belong to, and during lunch time or after-school class, the researcher provides a one-to-one intervention to the participating children. For the experiment, multiple-probe-across-subject design is adopted, and it is conducted in the order of the baseline, intervention, generalization, and maintenance. At the step prior to the baseline, SDLMI’s step Ⅰ is performed to have each of the participating children set up their own goals about their class participation behavior during the special class of Korean. During the baseline period, with no intervention provided, the researcher collected data about the class participation behavior rate and problematic behavior rate at special Korean class which those participating children had set as their goals. Right after the baseline, the intervention began, and so did SDLMI’s step Ⅱ to have the participating children make and implement plans to attain their goals. To get data about the behavior rate of the participating children during the baseline and intervention, a camera is installed in the special class room, and how they work at the Korean class three times a week is videotaped, and then, 10 seconds-based partial-interval recording is employed for collecting data. After the intervention, SDLMI’s step Ⅲ is conducted to have each of the participating children evaluate if their own goal has been attained. To measure their generalization right after the intervention, data about their behavior rate are collected from three sessions of special math class in a row, and 4 weeks after the intervention, data about the maintenance of 3 sessions are collected under the same conditions of the baseline and intervention. The findings of this study can be summed up as below: First, after the SDLMI intervention, all the three participating children indicated the increased class participation behavior rate they had set at special Korean class from the baseline. This positive effect was generalized in special math class, too. Even after the completion of the intervention, the increased class participation behavior rate that each of the participating children had set was maintained. Second, after the SDLMI intervention, all the three participating children showed the decreased problematic behavior rate at special Korean class from the baseline. This positive effect was generalized in special math class, too. Even after the completion of the intervention, the decreased problematic behavior rate of each child was maintained. Above results imply that the tablet PC-based SDLMI intervention has positive effects in improving the class participation behavior rate and reducing the problematic behavior rate of elementary school students with severe intellectual disability. Lastly, this study is significant in that it has reconstructed SDLMI, an intervention strategy reported to be effective for disabled students, as pictures in consideration of the characteristics of students with severe intellectual disability and presented it through a tablet PC to them, thereby proving its positive effects on students with severe intellectual disability.
