Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate teachers' perceptions of personality education in elementary school with a focus on the art subject and provide basic data for effective personality education in the art subject. For those purposes, the study examined the significance of personality education in art education by theoretically reviewing personality education and art education and developed a questionnaire as an instrument to measure and examine teachers' perceptions of it. The questionnaire consisted of the items on the perceptions of overall personality education, personality education provided in school, overall art education, and personality education during art classes. Replacing a face-to-face interview, short-answer items addressed teachers' opinions about personality education and how to implement it in art education. The questionnaire was distributed to 205 incumbent homeroom teachers in elementary schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Total 188 valid questionnaires were used in final analysis. Collected data were put to frequency analysis and cross-tabulation with the SPSS Win. 18.0 program. The analysis results were summarized as follows: First, elementary school teachers' general perceptions of personality education were examined. The results show that 93.6% of them had great interest in personality education. They felt a need for personality education since the students lacked the idea of being considerate and sharing with others due to the individualistic values. They said that the goal of personality education was to help the students become considerate of others and develop the ability to empathize with them. In addition, 92.0% of the teachers said that family and parents had the biggest influence on personality education. Second, elementary school teachers' perceptions of personality education provided in school were also examined. As a result, 96.8% of them said that school had huge interest in personality education, and 75% had a positive perception of practice of personality education in school. Those who had a negative perception of practice of personality education in school picked overload of administrative work as the biggest obstacle to its practice and poor education in connection with family as the second biggest obstacle to its practice. Elementary school teachers said that school should pursue personality education connected to family education and then incorporated into subject classes. According to their answers, morality was the subject in which personality education would be activated most, being followed by Korean and physical education. Third, elementary school teachers' general perceptions of art education were also examined in the study. The results reveal that 52.1% of them were interested in art education, that many teachers cited aesthetics as the core capability to be cultivated in art lessons, and that they placed the greatest focus on the content of lesson during art classes. Fourth, the study also examined elementary school teachers' perceptions of personality education in art lessons. As a result, 78.2% considered personality education to be important in art lessons, and 58.5% said its practice was poor. According to them, the absence of concerned educational programs hindered personality education in art lessons. They also said that of the characteristics of art education, the free and diverse expressions of internal emotions would be the most appropriate for personality education and that they thought they were practicing personality education when offering the students plenty of chances for expression during art classes. Fifth, teachers' opinions about personality education were gathered. They stressed the importance of personality education in all the aspects of family education and school life and in all the subjects and felt a need for administrative supports including in-service teacher training and educational programs. They also emphasized the importance of their opinions and attitudes regarding consistent personality education and individual counseling-based personality education. Finally, the study also gathered their opinions about how to practice personality education in art education. As a result, many teachers said that personality education would be possible in the domains of expression and appreciation in art. Some raised a need for administrative supports such as concerned in-service teacher training and program development and the introduction of art therapy. Others said that personality education would be possible through collaborative learning of the teaching and learning methods. Based on the analysis results, the study reached the following conclusions: First, the teachers recorded a very high level of interest in personality education and believed personality education was important in art lessons, only to be poor with its practice. Second, their interest level in art education was lower than their interest in personality education, which raises a need to increase the perception of and interest in the important of art education among elementary school teachers. Third, elementary school teachers were in need of concerned educational programs and in-service teacher training programs to practice personality education through the art subject, which calls for specific, consistent, and diverse in-service training programs related to personality education in the art subject. Finally, elementary school teachers believed that personality education would be possible through expressive activities in the art subject and concentrated art lessons on expression, which raises a need to change their viewpoint to practice-based lessons. They should be encouraged to realize that personality education is possible across all the areas of experience, appreciation and expression and develop perceptions of personality newly required in the changing society.
