중학교 영어교과서의 기본어휘 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 현행 중학교 영어교과서가 문교부의 교육과정 목표를 달성하기 위해서 합당하게 구성되어 있는가를 여러 학자들이 제시한 영어의 기본어휘를 중심으로 조사하며, 교과서 어휘선정의 기준과 문제점, 어휘의 빈도와 분포등을 연구·검토함으로써 보다 효율적인 영어 학습의 자료를 제공함을 그 목적으로 한다. 1984년에 개정된 영어교과서 전 3권의 본문 총 어휘수는 1,206어이며 문교부에서 배우기를 권장하는 기본어휘는 730어이다. 교과서에 수록된 어휘의 타당성 여부는 다른 어휘표와 비교함으로써 조사 하였다 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 기본 어휘의 선정은 잘 되어 있으나 총 72 어에 달하는 어휘가 교과서에 실리지 않았다. 교과서에 기본 어휘의 반영율은 100%가 되어야 할 것이다. 2. 빈도와 분포의 문제를 고려하여야 한다. 181어가 오직 한번만 교과서에 나왔다가 사라지고 있으며 이것은 총 어휘수의 15%에 달한다. 따라서 교과서 편집자는 이러한 어휘들의 빈도와 분포를 늘리도록 해야 한다. 3. 저학년에서는 추상적인 어휘보다는 일상생활에서 널리 접할 수 있는 구체어를 많이 다루어야 한다. 추상어는 빈도가 높고 분포가 넓을지라도 학습이 힘든 것으로 여겨지고 있다. 이러한 결과에 따라 다음과 같은 제언을 하고자 한다. 1. 어휘표는 조사방법에 따라 그 기준이 다르기 때문에 기존의 어휘표에 무조건 의지하는 것은 바람직하지 못하다. 교과서 편집자는 기존의 어휘표를 충분히 검토하고 자신의 실험적 연구를 토대로 우리 학생에게 맞는 가장 적절한 어휘를 선정하여 교과서에 잘 배열하도록 한다. 2. 현행교과서를 사용하는 교사는 빈도가 낮고 분포가 좁은 어휘들을 잘 파악하여 학습이 효율적으로 이루어질 수 있는 방안을 강구하여야겠다. 3. 어휘습득 만으로 목표 언어를 모두 학습했다고 볼 수 없다. 이 어휘의 사용단계까지 노력을 해야 할 것이다.;The purpose of this thesis is to suggest ways for the effecitve English teaching by reviewing the basic words contained in middle school English textbooks, giving emphasis on the scientific selection and the range of words on the grounds of the principles laid down by the Ministry of Education of Korea. This study deals with 1,206 words employed in Middle School English Book Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ edited in 1984, and 730 basic words selected by the Ministry of Educaiton. Then, the validity of textbook basic words of the textbooks were investigated by comparing them with other English word lists. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Selecting basic words is good, but 72 basic words are ommited in the textbooks. The compiler must increase the number of basic words in the textbooks. 2. The frequency and range should see more modified. 181 words have appeared only once in the textbooks. These words occupy 15% of the total words appearing in the textbooks. The compiler should heighten the frequency and widen range these words. 3. It is natural that abstract words are difficult to learn though they are high in frequency and wide in range. In the lower grades, the vocabulary should be made up of concrete words which students confront in daily life. From the above results I want to make the following suggestions: 1. The compiler should select and arrange words properly on the basis of appropriate word lists and the compiler's experimental investigation. 2. The teachers have to recognize the proper frequency and appropriate range for the student's effective word learning. 3. Teachers must study continuously in order to guide students from the shill-acquiring to the skill-using stages.
