Abstract
In many conservative societies, women are expected to play a vital fole in family s survival and well-bing. As mothers and wives, they live with great burden to suppert husbanns and provide good education to their children. In their middle-age, they experience menopause and the childre claim independence, and consequently they suffer from depression accompanied by isolation and loss of identity. Therefore, depression of middle-ages woman is not only personal issue, but can be a social issue. The purpose of this study is to examine if Guided Imagery and Music(GM) can be uses to reduce depression. GIM is a gechnique debelopment by Helen Bonny which utilizes programmed classical music. It is a listening intervention which perports to lead the listener for an explorative journey with music. Three housewives diagnosed with depression participated in the study. They received 10 individual sessions via quantiative and qualitative means. Quantitatively the prepost test scores were obtained using Beck Depression Inventory. Self-Esteem Inventory, and lastly. skin temperature were recorded using Biotic Band II before and after each session. Qualitatively the participants evaluated smoothness and depth of each sesson using the provided questionnaire, and researcher reported each session by transcrybing the journey dialogue. The results showed that quantitative scores of selr-esteem and depression has shown a posivtive changes. The skin temperature also increased after each session, which indicated that the participants tention level has reduced during the session(p<.001). The qualitative measurement indicated that participants response to the session has become more in-depth and smooth as session progressed. The study showed that in the beginning, participants experienced ansiousness and Ioneliness due to the loss of identify. however, with musical ewploration of inner-self and ego, they were able of identify their self-worth, purpose and meaning of life. They visualized different imageries provided with music and able to gain insights in terms of what they meant. The study showed that GIM is a therapeutid approcah to work with housewives. GIM resperts passive participation in music and invites the to examine their inner world and strengthen their ago by identifying self-identity and support system in the environment.
