Abstract
Sculpture, which is the concrete three dimensional form of art occupying a certain space, is the art satisfying man's visual desire for mass. Therefore, to create various forms of volume as the artist intends becomes an important theme of expression. In this respect, what elements result the variation in the expression of volume and thereby create the various artistic effects should be examined. And the possibility of the volume expression which becomes unlimited as the concept of volume extends should also be studied. In the creative process the artist should choose a particular material with conerete texture. Therefore, an analytical understanding is required on the effect of volume in sculpture created according to its material and technique. The purpose of this study is as follows. 1. to analyse positively the effect of the volume expression in sculpture according to its material and thereby, to examine its artistic characteristics. 2. to study a new possibility in the volume expression in sculpture offered by the extention and development of the concept about volume. In this study the effect of volume expressed in the works of sculpture is to be examined, dividing the material nto 5 categories such as wood, tone, metal, plastics and light, and the interviews with sculpture is also to be examined. The methods of the study are as follows. 1. the theoretical study through documents is performed. 2. discussing 45 works of sculpture by 25 Korean and foreign sculpture, volume expression varied by material are examined in comparison. 3. On the basis of interviews with 12 Korean sculptors the relation between the material and the volume expression is examined. The outlines of the major diseovreries of this study are as follows. First of all, to explain the characteristics of the volume expression that differs according to the particular material used, the volume in wood sculpt re is characterized by softness and simplicity obtained by making the most of the natural color anf grain of wood itself. The volume in stone sculpture is characterized by its solidity, durability and excessive massiveness obtained by treating the material roughly or delicately and by polishing the sarface fer glossy effect. The characteristics of metal as a material of sculpture is solidity, hardness, durability and high modeling possibility. so, the volume in metal sculpture is characterized by solidity with effects of color, texture, and space obtained by using various techingues such as casting, welding, polishing, and corroding. The volume in plastic sculpture is characterized by non - visuality effected by transparency of the materal with unique gloss and color, and by fransformed texture obtained by conpound material. The volume in sculpture of light is characterized by non - tactility and non - visuality obtained by the complex effect of such elements as the quality and the quantity of light, time and space, and dynamics of light. 1. The artistic charcteristics of the volume expression in the sculpture is varied in relation with material. Besides, the volume expression is also varied by techique. Therefore, the material and the technique are the elements that determins the artistic characteristics of the volume expression. Next, the possibility of new expression according to the change of the concept of volume can be developed in the standpont stated below. According to the development of the concept of volume, the new understanding of plastic element, and the pursuit of a different form of beauty, the expression of volume becomes various. The spirit of experiment in the creative process, which is free and challenging for a new sense of beauty, pursuits continuous development of possibility of expression. As the meaning of material in the essence of plastic arts is boundless, invention of various materials and development of technigues accompanies various new expressions of volume. Volume developed from visual effects of the plastic elements, and experience and strong creative impulse in the creative process creates various expressions of volume. 2. As the sense of beauty, the concept of volume and the material change and extent, the volume expression in sculpture becomes more various.;彫塑는 일정한 空間을 차지하는 具體的인 空間存在的具 形態로서 量에 대한 人間의 視覺的 慾望을 충족시켜주는 藝術이기 때문에 여러가지 形態의 意圖的 量感을 形成하는 것은 表現의 중요한 과제가 된다. 이 感覺的 形態에서 量感表現의 變化나 그 다양한 造形的 效果를 지배하는 요인은 어디에 있으며, 또한 이 量感에 대한 槪念의 확신이나 發展에 따라 그 表現의 무한한 可能性에 대한 檢討의 必要가 提起되고 있다. 本 硏究의 目的은 마음과 같다. 1. 彫塑에 있어서 材料에 따른 量感表現의 效果를 實證的으로 分析하여 그 造形的 特性을 규명하는데 있다. 2. 彫塑에 있어서 量感에 대한 槪念의 變化, 擴散, 發展에 따라 그 表現의 새로운 可能性을 파악하는데 있다. 本 硏究의 內容은 彫塑에 있어서 木, 石금, 金屬, 合成樹脂, 빛의 5가지 재료별로 분류하여 作品에 表現된 量感效果와 作家面談內容을 分析하였다. 本 硏究의 方法은 다음과 같다. 1. 文獻을 통하여 理論的으로 考寮하였다. 2. 國內·外園 25名의 作品 45点을 통하여 材料別로 量感表現을 比較 分析하였다. 3. 국내 작가 12명의 面談은 토대로 하여 材料와 達感表現과의 관계를 檢證하였다. 本 硏究의 結論은 다음과 같다. 1. 彫塑에 있어서 材料에 따라 量感表現의 造形的 特性은 달라진다. 또한 技法에 따라서 量感表現은 다르게 形成된다. 木彫는 도구의 活用과 技法에 의하여 고유색과 나무결등의 특색을 표현한 유연하고 소박한 量感이다. 石彫는 거칠고 섬세하게 또는 연마하여 광택효과를 表現한 견고하고 강한 耐久力에서 오는 量感과 과대한 重量感을 포함한 量感이다. 金屬彫는 强度, 硬度, 耐久力이 높고 可塑性이 풍부하여 주造, 용접, 연마. 부식 등에 의한 色彩, 質感, 空間效果가 표현된 강인한 量感이다. 合成樹駱의 作品은 독특한 광맥과 색채가 있는 투명감각에의 非視覺的 量感과 혼화재료에 의한 變化된 質感에 따른 量感이다. 빛의 作品은 非觸覺的 量感과 빛의 質量과 量諒, 時間과 空間, 運動感과등의 복합효과에 의한 非視覺的인 量感이다. 그러므로 材料와 技法은 量感表現의 造形的 特性을 支配한다. 2 .彫塑에 있어서 美意識이나, 量感의 槪念은 材料의 變化와 開發에 의해서 量感表現이 아래와같이 多樣化된다. 量感에 대한 槪念의 變化나 조형요소의 새로운 해석에 따라서 또 다른 美形式에 대한 추구에서 오는 量感表現은 多樣化된다. 創作現象에서 오는 實驗精神은 새로운 美意識에 대한 自由와 도전에 의해서 그 表現 可能性은 부단히 전개된다. 造形의 本質에서 오는 材料의 意味은 무한함으로 다양한 材科의 出現과 技法의 개발은 새로운 量感表現을 수반한다. 造形要素의 視覺的 表現效果에서 개발되는 量感과 製作過程에서의 원숙한 체험과 강력한 量感의 多樣한 표현을 가져온다.
