;The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of mathematical reasoning the focus being; The obstacles and motivations associated with the mathematical reasoning, during the process of problem solving in small group activity. For this purpose, following four research questions were; 1. When students participate in problem solving in small group, what process of mathematical reasoning do they utilize? And what is meaningful distinctions between the grades during the process of mathematical reasoning? 2. What obstacles do students face during the process of mathematical reasoning? And how do students overcome these obstacles? 3. What motivations lead the students in the process of reasoning? To solve these issues, three target groups were selected from a C academy of gifted education. The target groups were from the second, fourth, and sixth grade elementary level. Each group had a variation of three to seven students participants, 2^nd grade=4×small groups ; 21 students 4^th grade=2×small groups ; 12 students 6^th grade=3×small groups ; 9 students. As students participated in the group activities, primary data was collected and recorded. This primary data provided the foundation of this study. The following results were drawn from the target group analysis. Firstly, the students utilize a regular pattern of the process of reasoning to find solutions to the problem presented. The students observe the problems accurately when they begin the process of mathematical reasoning. At this initial step the students evaluate how to apply previously gained knowledge to the problem. If this tool is adequate to solve the problem, students solve the problem using the knowledge as the basis for simple deductions. However should this tool prove inadequate, the students must begin step 2; return to the presented problem to rework the problem solving. Throughout the reworking, the students observe a pattern in their problem, conjecturing that the pattern applies generally, and test that the conjecture is correct or incorrect. If correct, the generalization activates step 3. Here they apply the generalization and find a correct solution to the presented problem. If incorrect, the students must return to the presented problem and begin again, this is step 4. Students utilize these steps until they find the correct solution to the presented problem. Thstudents process a regular pattern of reasoning, but also, there is a meaningful distinction between the grades. Five such distinctions were identified; 1. A difference in the volume of knowledge learned by experience. 2. A difference in capability of obtaining and utilizing informations about a problem. 3. A difference in psychological attitude of informations obtained. 4. A difference in the characteristic of repeatedly used vocabularies and sentences. 5. A difference of aspect in the development of the reasoning. Secondly, I found students faced various obstacles throughout the process of mathematical reasoning to solve the problem. The first obstacle came from being unfamiliar with the definition of mathematical terms and mathematical symbols or how to use it. The second obstacle was the capability to grasp the kernel of the problem. The third, the capability to unify particular facts convergently. The fourth obstacle, they couldn't associate with the kernel of the problem and particular facts. The final obstacle were the errors generated from simple miscalculations or wrong applications of formulas and general knowledge. Thirdly, I analysed what methods the students utilized to overcome these obstacles. The students used four methods. Firstly, they reflected on their reasoning process. Secondly, they attempt the process of reasoning again individually. Thirdly, they found errors with being pointed out errors from friends or teachers, and fourthly, they got hints about his own faults and overcome errors through the communication with another people. The students found and modified errors and overcome obstacles through communication with inter-person and intra-person. Lastly, an analysis of the students motives in the small group environment was conducted. Three motives were identified; 1. Individual understanding; Students initially work individually 2. Group understanding; Students present their solutions to the group to promote understanding 3. Group persuasion; Students provide further reasoning for the group understanding and participants brainstorm their solutions. I found these motives did not make the process complicated but rather, more logical and precise.-
