Abstract
;Traditional algebra study takes formal approaching, but new attempt to improve algebra curriculum considers reasoning most importantly. And, with this attempt, various researches on approaching concerning the introduction of algebra are currently on going. There are problem-solving perspective on the introduction of algebra, modeling perspective on the introduction of algebra and generalization perspective on the introduction of algebra concerning alternative ways of introduction of algebra. Generalization could induce students who are at the period of studying between arithmetic and algebra to recognize relation between quantities, to use symbols naturally expressing the regularity appearing in the relation. Also, generalization is one of the important ways to induce students to have algebraical thinking considering arithmetical experience that has been learned for a long time by them. I have conducted researches on approaching algebra through generalization perspective with assuming that generalization is able to be acquired by regularity which is derived from reasoning the relation between the quantities and figuring out the quantitative condition and the pattern of them. To provide fundamental data for algebra instructions through generalization, and to help understanding about reasoning of the students, I've set following questions. First, How is ability for generalization of Middles School Freshmen? Second, How are the types of investigation for generalization of Middles School Freshmen? To conduct these researches, I selected 362 middle school freshmen, those are before stepping into the course of □□character and formula', from 5 classes among 2 middle schools in Seoul. And, to analysis for generalization of Middles School Freshmen and their types of investigation, I made survey paper by myself and used it to examine them based on current textbook. To analysis the students' ability for generalization, I pulled out elements of generalization ability based on previous studies, and analyzed their generalization ability. And to help understanding about their thinking , I have checked the types of investigation for generalization. Results of analysing students' generalization ability based on its elements at the rate of correct answers are like following statements. Among entire students, 80.3% of them is able to find rules from mathematic facts and 40.33% of them is able of apparent understanding the rules and expressing them in language. Students who can figure out common facts(similarities) or differences between two questions or situations take 40.05% and those able to apply generalized results to a specific situation take 43.92% among entire students. And 22.91% of them answered correctly to the question; How would it be written in symbols to express Nth number and 4.69% of them answered correctly to the question; Can you explain these generalized results From these results, I have confirmed possibility of that students naturally accept characters acquired from recognizing relation between given quantities and rules derived from that relation. While, students who expressed generalized formula by symbols at generalization element 5 and 6, question I-6 were 33.14%, but only 4.69% was able to explain it. Likewise, students who expressed generalized formula by symbols at question II-2 are 28.4% but only 6.9% is able to explain it. To question IV-1-2, 7.18% answered and 4.86% was able to explain it. From this result, we can know that middle school freshmen who are before learning algebra yet, have more difficulties using expressions than using symbols to express generalized results in explaining their answer. Also, we can know that they are rather to express regularity in verbal language than do it by using charts or symbols. That proportion of students who makes generalization by contextual was about each 46.4% and 35% on category of students' types found in Lannin's study, means it takes high proportion on both types. Lannin said that student's strategy using algebraic reasoning could be helpful for teachers to construct available algebraic generalization by confirming errors commonly made by students. He also said that contextual is the most desirable method to make a generalization dealing with question. Seeing the rate of each type's students of question I-5 and II-3 at classification of investigation types for generalization, we can know that students, except those of type 4, tried to use other ways to solve the problem when it became more complicated. This shows us that contextual is also an useful way, when it comes with more complicated problems. That question IV require less inducement to process for searching regularity than question I and II, and that students easily expect regularity because question I and II are similar could be the factors of that rate of correct answers to question IV was prominently low than to question I, II and III. Students using contextual take about 40% in the result of categorization of investigation for generalization. Also, it could be said that students' inducement for generalization to the questions with which they have dealt has effects on the rate of correct answers. At the end of this research, I would like to make following suggestions. First of all, survey demanding students to write both an essay and a simple answer to question is used in this research. There are some bounds, however, on analysing the student's process of thinking when writing is demanded only. Therefore, it is considered that analysing students' diverse thinking is needed by using thorough interview to understand their thinking. Secondly, paper test is a limited way to analyze students' process of thinking thoroughly, but knowing that describing regularity in language evidently which they figured out from the questions, 40% of students recognize changing quantities, we could accept a natural concept of the fluent as a guidance to show the changing quantities. Thirdly, knowing that students feel difficult more to explain generalized expression than to express generalized results by using symbols , it needs to make them have a habit to explain their answer to others after solving the problem at the time of algebra instruction through generalization.
