20세기 서구여성의 머리형태의 변천에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 서구여성의 머리형태의 변천에 관한 연구로 20세기의 일반적 시대 배경과 예술사적 배경 그리고 복식의 변천을 지적하고 머리형태가 어떻게 변천 되었는 지를 표현의지와 양식적 특성의 측면에서 연구하였다. 20세기 서구는 급격한 과학 기술의 발달과 함께 1950년대 이후 정치적으로는 데탕트 시대가 경제적으로는 풍요로움의 시대가 도래하였다. 정치적 안정과 경제적 풍요로움은 대중들의 힘을 크게하여 사회 제반 체제를 수용적으로 받아들였던 사고방식에서 탈피하여 자신들의 의지를 자유롭게 나타내는 방식으로의 전환이 나타났다. 이런 성향은 예술과 복식에도 나타나는데, 예술은 자연의 재현과 형식적 기준을 맞추려는 것에서 벗어나 다양한 방식으로 예술의 자율성을 수립하려했고, 복식은 하이패션 중심에서 대중 중심의 패션으로의 전환이 나타났다. 복식과 밀접한 관련이 있는 머리형태 또한 이런 자유로운 성향이 나타났다. 즉 20세기 전반기에는 머리형태가 어떤 의지의 표현이라기 보다는 패션잡지나 신문의 지시에 따라 그 시기에 유행하는 머리 스타일을 그대로 하고 다닌 수용적 형태였다. 그러나 1950년대에 들어서면서 기존의 스타일 외에 이를 거부하고 자신의 의지를 머리모양으로 나타낸 반항적 형태도 나타났다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 표현의지를 중심으로 20세기에 나타난 머리형태를 전술한 것과 같은 의미에서 수용적 스타일과 반항적 스타일로 나누어 명명했다. 또한 이런 표현의지를 나타내기 위해 20세기에 특징적으로 나타나는 머리형태를 중심으로 수용적 스타일은 퐁파두르 스타일, 보브 스타일, 쇼트 커트 스타일, 퍼머넌트 웨이브 스타일로 반항적 스타일은 아프로 스타일, 히피 스타일, 펑크 스타일로 크게 구분하였다. 앞에 열거한 7가지 머리형태를 다시 양식상의 특성을 중심으로 세부적으로 고찰해 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째 퐁파두르 스타일은 20세기 초 당시의 풍요로움과 art nouveau의 곡선미가 머리형태에 나타난 것으로, 전시대의 과잉장식의 머리형태에서 단순한 형태로 가는 첫단계에 나타난 스타일이다. 둘째 보브 스타일은 단발의 총칭으로써 쓰였으나 20세기 후반으로 접어들면서 짧은 브런트 커트(blunt cut)를 의미하게 되었으며 20세기에 풍미한 기능주의 사상으로 인한 단순함의 추구와 댄스 붐, 그리고 여성 해방운동과 함께 1910년대 중반 부터 나타난 머리 형태로 20세기들어 여성이 짧은 단발을 채택하게되는 계기가 되었다. 셋째 쇼트 커트 스타일은 1920년대 중반에 나타난 머리형태로써 일종의 보브이나 이를 강조해서 더욱 짧고 층이 나게 자른 shingle bob로 여성이 남성과 같은 형태의 머리를 하게 되어 머리형태에 있어서 유니섹스 스타일이 나타나게 된 것이다. 넷째 퍼머넌트 웨이브 스타일은 30년대의 불황과 함께 여성스러움을 추구하던 시대상황과 퍼머넌트 웨이브 기술상의 발달로 온 머리형태로 부드러운 퍼머넌트 웨이브 머리가 보편적인 형태가 되었다. 다섯째 아프로 스타일은 50년대 후반의 흑인 민권운동과 함께 흑인들이 그들의 자부심과 반항의 의지를 머리형태에 나타내게 된 것으로 서아프리카풍의 이국적 머리형태가 처음으로 서구에 나타나게 된 계기가 되었다. 여섯째 히피 스타일은 60년대 들어 전시대에 유행했던 짧은 머리에 대한 반발, 록가수에 대한 모방, 자연회귀 경향, Ethnic 취미, 무엇보다도 현 체제에 대한 반항의식을 머리형태에 나타낸 것으로, 인공적 머리형태가 아니라 풀어헤친 헝클어진 자연스런 머리형태에서 처음으로 아름다움을 느껴서 유행하게 된 것이다. 일곱째 펑크 스타일은 70년대의 2차에 걸친 오일 쇼크와 불황으로 인해 미래가 암울해진 젊은이들이 머리를 짧게 깎거나 세우고 염색을 함으로써 그들의 좌절을 밖으로 표출하고, 일반인들의 관심을 유도한 것으로 처음으로 위협적 스타일에서 아름다움을 느끼게 된 것이였다. 위와 같이 머리형태는 그 형이 유행하던 시대의 표현의지를 반영하는 한 방식이 되고 있다. 또한 20세기에 나타난 머리형태의 양식적 특성은 단순하고 기능적인 스타일, 단발 스타일, 남성적 스타일, 부드러운 퍼머넌트 웨이브 스타일, 자연적 스타일, 이국적 스타일, 위협적 스타일로 요약될 수 있는데 이것은 단순하고 자연적인 스타일로서 순수성과 우연성을 지향한 현대예술의 조형적 지향과도 같은 경향으로 나타났다.;This thesis aimed to research 20th century western women's coiffure's change. For this, backgrounds of art and cloth including other general peculiarities of 20th century had been studied. Related with the former backgrounds, how the coiffure changed had been researched, which were forcused on expression will and characteristics of the styles. In the western countries of the 20th century, there appeared the political detant and economic affuluence with scientific & technical development. These phenomena enlarged people's power, and changed their way of thinking about social systems: from passive way to active one in which they tried to express their own will. These inclinations appeared in art & cloth. Art Tried to escape from realistic description to make sovereignty of art itself, and cloth changed from Haute Couture leading fahion to public leading fahion. Coiffure which has a very close connections with fashion also accepted these free inclination. The first half of the 20th century, coiffure was accomadate form following fashion journal or news paper's directions. but after 1950s, not only accomodate form but also rebellious form expressing her will as her hair style appeared. So this thesis divided 20th century' coiffure into two forms: accomodate form and rebellious form laying stress on expression will. To explain this expression will of the characteristic coiffure in the 20th century, these two styles can be devided by several ones. Accomodate styles are referring to pompadour style, bob style, short cut style, permanent wave style, and rebellious styles referring to afro style, hippie style, punk style. The above mentioned seven hair styles can be analyzed in detail as belows. First, pompadour style can be explained as hair style showing the abundunce and curvaceousness of art nouveau in the 20th century. It is the first style which appeared in the process of change from excessively decorative style to simple one. Second, bob style, referring to all short hair syle at first but latter referring to short blunt cut, appeared in the middle of 1920s with social changes such as women's liberation movement, dancing boom, and the preference of simplicity affected, by 20th century's functionalism. Since this style appeared, women began to choose short hair as their hair style for the first time. Third, short cut included in bob style, appeared putting more stress on bob with very short tapered hair in 1920s. It was the first mannish unisex hair style. Forth, permanent wave style appeared with preference of feminine style with the depression of the 1930s and the development of permanent wave techniques. Fifth, afro style shows the black people's pride and their will of protest. This style appeared with the black people's right movement. Owing to this style, the exotic south african style was first intoroduced in western world. Sixth, hippie style in the 1960's showed the objection to the previous short cut style, inclination of returning to the native, imitation of rock singers, ethnic taste, and more than anything else the protest against social system. In hippie style, beautiful hair style was becomming considered not only artificial style but also naturally flowing hairdo. Seventh, punk style can be defined as the first threatening style to reveal young people's frustration and attract people's attention by means of cutting, erectting or dyeing their hair. This style showed young people's gloomy about the future because of two oil shocks and economic recess in the 1970s. Like aboves, hair style is the way to reflect the expression will of its period and society. And 20th century's hair style's characteristics can be summarized by simple and functional style, short hair style, unisex style, soft permanent wave style, natural style, exotic style, and threatening style. That is, simple and natural style is prevalent, and this has the same tendency with modern art inclination to purity and casuality.
