영어의 WH - 구문의 난이도에 관한 연구

Abstract

영어의 WH-구문은 관계절문과 의문문으로 구분된다. 그런데, 한국어에는 관계대명사에만 해당되는 형태소가 없고, 의문문의 경우는 구조가 다르게 나타난다. 따라서, 본 연구의 목적은 영어와 한국어의 통사적 차이 때문에 우리나라 학생들이 학습하는 데 있어 어려움을 겪는 WH-구문에 대한 이해도 및 난이도를 알아보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저, 생성문법적인 이론의 틀 안에서 WH-구문에 대한 선행연구들을 살펴보고 WH-구문의 난이도 및 학생들의 이해도를 측정한 실험을 하였다. 실험대상으로는 고등학교를 졸업한 대학교 신입생들 116명을 선택했다. 실험자료는 중·고교에서 흔히 다루는 WH-구문들과 생성문법적인 설명 없이는 이해가 어려운 구문들을 골라 택했다. 실험결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, WH-의문문보다 WH-관계절문에 대한 이해도가 높게 나타났다. 이것은 한국어에서 WH-의문문의 경우에는 WH-어에 해당하는 한국어가 있고 단지 어순이 차이가 날 뿐이지만 WH-관계절문에서는 WH-어에 해당하는 우리말이 없으므로 교사나 학생들이 관계절문에 대해 의식적으로 더 많은 노력을 기울인 결과로 여겨진다. 둘째, 학생들의 ○, ×형 문항의 정답율에 있어서 틀린 문장보다 맞은 문장의 정답율이 높게 나타났다. 이는 ×표로 답하는 경우에는 그 문장을 옳게 고쳐야 한다는 부담감 때문에 확실한 답을 모르겠으면 ○표로 답하려는 학생들의 심리로 이해된다. 셋째, WH-이동의 제약들의 종류에 따라서 그 제약과 관련된 문항들의 정답율에 차이가 났다. 이 정답율의 상대적인 순서는 영어 전공학생들의 경우와 비전공학생들의 경우 그리고 전공과 비전공을 합한 전체 학생들의 경우에 약간의 차이는 있었지만 그 차이의 정도가 아주 작아서 문제가 되지 않았다. 넷째, 영어전공 학생과 비전공 학생간에는 난이도에 따른 문항들의 정답율에 차이가 났다. 난이도가 낮은 항목에서는 전공생과 비전공생이 비슷한 정답율을 보이는데 반해, 난이도가 높은 항목에서는 같은 문장에 대한 전공생과 비전공생의 정답율이 큰 차이를 보였는데, 이 차이는 신뢰도가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 모호한 문장들에 대한 학생들의 이해도를 알아보는 문항의 정답율은 꽤 높았는데, 그 중에서도 간접 의문문 혹은 관계절 구문으로 해석되는 문장의 이해도가 가장 높았다. 이 부분에서는 모든 문항에 걸쳐 전공생들의 정답율이 비전공생들의 정답율보다 훨씬 높았다.;English WH-Phrases are largely classified into Relative clauses and WH-Questions. There is no Korean morpheme corresponding to the English Relative Pronouns and the structure of Korean is different from that of English in WH-Questions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of understanding and difficulty of the WH-Phrases Korean students have. In order for this study, the preceding studies about WH-Phrases within the transformationalism were observed and also the experiment was conducted on the difficulty and the understanding which students feel on WH-Phrases. The subjects of the experiment were chosen one hundred and sixteen freshmen who have graduated from high school. The materials of the experiment were the WH-Phrases which the students get used to dealing through many examples during high school years and those which are felt to be difficult to understand without the explanation of the Transformational Grammar. The results of the experiment are as follows. First students understood the WH-Relative clauses better than the WH-Questions. It may be because, in WH-Questions, Korean has words corresponding to the WH-Words of WH-Questions in English only in a different order. But since there is no Korean word corresponding to the English Relative Pronouns in Relative clauses, both teachers and students have put much effort to study the Relative clauses. Second, when O, X questions were given, the rate of correct answers in the grammatical sentences is higher than in the ungrammatical sentences. Students who mark X have to correct errors, so it seems that students intend to mark 0 when they don't know the reasons for the ungrammaticality. Third, in the questions related with the constraints, the rate of correct answers of the sentences connected with one constraint(of WH-movement) differed from that of the sentences related to the others. When comparing the rate of correct answers, the order was not always fixed among the English majors non-English majors and total of majors and non-majors. Fourth, there was a different rate of marking on correct sentences between the English majors and the non-English majors with the different degree of difficulties. At the items with low degree of difficulty, the rate of marking on correct sentences was appeared almost same between the English majors and the non-English majors. But there were big differences in high degree of difficulty. Fifth, the rate of correct answers of the ambiguous sentences was fairly high, especially the degree of understanding of the sentence which is interpreted as Indirect-Question or Relative clause. There appearing the rate of correct sentences of the English majors was far higher than that of the non-English majors.
