現行 中學校 英語 敎科書의 語彙 分析

Abstract

言語敎育에 있어서 語彙는 重要한 比重을 차지한다. 그러나, 英語에는 매우 방대한 양의 語彙가 있기 때문에 전부 指導하는 것은 不可能하므로 語彙 選定의 問題가 야기되며 이에 따르는 配列이 重要視 된다. 本 硏究에서는 現行 中學校 英語 敎科書 語彙의 頻度와 配列이 1.2.3 學年에 걸쳐 反復의 原則이 적용되었는가와 文敎部가 提示한 基本語彙가 적절하게 使用되었는가를 살펴보기로 한다. 이 敎料書 語彙들을 6종의 語彙表와 比較하였다. 敎科書 語彙를 調査한 결과 總 語彙數가 1 ,452語로 文敎部가 提示한 1 ,050보다 훨씬 초과하였다. 頻度에 있어서도 頻度9 以下가 전체 語彙의 63.5 %를 차지하고 있어 語彙 選定이 잘 統制되지 않음을 알 수 있다. 그러므로, 頻度가 낮은 語彙들을 敎師가 可能한 反復 練習시키므로 學習者에게 習得할 수 있는 機會를 마련해 주어야 할 것이다. 配列에 관한 問題는 처음 소개된 학년에서만 反復 練習하기 보다 될 수 있는 대로 여러 學年에서 反復되는 것이 바람직하나 敎科書 語彙의 學年別 反復은 한 學年에서만 나타난 것이 50.3%이므로 敎師는 이를 學生들이 잊지 않도록 유의해야 한다. 文敎部가 提示한 基本語彙 730개는 敎科書에 반드시 收錄돼야 한다. 그러나, 現行 敎科書에 反映된 것은 전체 基本語彙의 90.4% 인 675개만 되었으므로 누락된 것은 學習時間을 통하여 보충해야 할 것이다. 選定된 語彙들을 語彙表와 比較하는 것은 語彙 選定을 평가할 수 있는 바람직한 方法이므로 敎科書 語彙를 6종의 語彙表와 比較하였다. 그 결과 敎科書에는 있지만 比較 對象으로 삼은 語彙表 중 어느 것에도 收錄되지 않은 單語와 敎科書에는 없지만 比較한 語彙表의 3개 以上에서 나타난 것을 찾아내었다. 이들 공통적으로 나타난 語彙 역시 基本的인 語彙로 볼 수 있으므로 學生들이 學習할 수 있도록 하는 것이 바람직하다.;Vocabulary is an important part in the language teaching. English has so many words that a language teacher can not teach all of these words and he needs to make vocabulary selections based on its grading. This paper is an attempt to analyze the frequency of vocabulary in the current Middle School English Textbooks and it also deals with the application of the repetitious principle. The Basic vocabulary set up by the Ministry of Education is examined to find out its appropriateness throughout the three year course of English. I compared the words in the textbooks with those of the six word lists, Thorndike and Lorge's E. Dale and C. Stone's, A. Harris and M. Jacobson's, C.K. Odgen's, J. Wepman and W. Hass's, and Ou Hyung-gu's. The total of the 1,452 words in the textbooks exceeded the total word limit proposed by the Ministry of Education. Frequenc checking of the words shows that 63.5% of the words appear less than 9 times. Therefore vocabulary selection is not adequately controlled. It is advisible for an English teacher to give students opportunities to learn these words by frequent repetition. Vocabulary grading is also important to facilitate effective learning. The 730 Basic vocabulary set up by Ministry of Education should have been included in the three textbooks but only 90.4% of it appears in the textbooks. The rest must be taught by individual teachers in class. Vocabulary selection is necessary because, instead of waist-ing many hours in teaching a large number of comparatively unimportant words, we must concentrate on teaching a relatively small number of important words well. In conclusion I found out that much more attention should be given to vocabulary selection.
